PTO
A friend of mine is giving me a PTO driven wood chipper and I would like to use it on my 40c but it operates at a hi RPM can I move the power shaft up to the top hole in the rear cover or do I need a special power shaft?
nothing crawles like a deere
Do you mean it is a 1000RPM chipper? If not, it has to be 540, same as your crawler.
The high speed shaft on your 40 is engine speed, so that will not work regardless.

The best thing about my Kabota is the 1000 spd PTO..Always wanted to invent a step up converter for it.Things like my PTO generator and saw rig and backhoe run at 1200 engine RPMs instead of 2400 that would be needed with the 540 . I do know there are some attachments set up for the 540.. have used a chipper like that one you have. Good luck and if someone knows a set up adapter i would love one and dump the kabota.
scampr 440icd, 350B, 47 Farmall H, 55 Farmall cub and ashamed to have a Kabota too
If it is a 1000RPM unit, it would come with a 1000 shaft, and would not couple to his 540 PTO. Unless the chipper he has is a monster, I highly doubt it is a 1000PTO unit.
Top shaft is not a PTO, and was never used as one. Only applications I know of that used it is Carco winches, and hyd pumps on some aftermarket backhoes, although undoubtedly there are others.
