440 track frame removal

Post by denny » Thu Feb 21, 2013 3:14 pm

I am trying to get my track frame off my 440 crawler. all 8 bolts are out and the crossmember tube is loose on the middle crossmember. The bolts are out of the rear crossmember tube mount and it is frozen on the tube. i am out of ideas on how to get it to loosen up. Tryed heat, pullers, sledge hammer and wedges. Still no luck, any ideas ?

I remember having a hard time with mine to. What I didn't know at the time is that the front cross member is recessed into the track frame about 1/2 inch so you may try to use a bottle jack and some blocking between both track frames if you can get the front one out then try putting a jack under the front of the track frame and see if you can get it to pivot on the rear cross member even a quarter of an inch just enough to brake the hold of the corrosion do it several times with some penetrating oil. watch your fingers and toes those track frames are awkward and heavy :)
Good luck

440 track frame removal

Post by gregjo1948 » Fri Feb 22, 2013 7:28 am

I 'm lost with this conversation. I just removed my left track frame from my 440 ICD. I jacked up-removed the track-removed the sprocket and front idler- removed the clamp on rear tube and 4 bolts on front tube- then, with a bar, slid the frame outwards until it came off the tubes. I think it took me about 1&1/2 hours.(At my age, that might be a record.) I don't understand which "bolts" you removed on the rear. On mine, there is 1 bolt per side that is thru a clamp holding the track frame from sliding off the tube. I just loosened the clamp, slid it off and the rear was ready for removal. Is your track frame frozen on the tube where the clamp is located? If so, and the front tube is free, mapaduke, had a great idea. Lift the front of the track frame up so it is pivoting on the rear tube. That should free it up allowing you to slide it off. Good luck :) gregjo1948

Early 440's are different than yours, the rear crossbar is bolted just like the front.

440 track frame removal

Post by denny » Fri Feb 22, 2013 11:24 am

the front has 2 flanges with 4 bolts holding them together. That flange is loose. The rear has NO clamp, just 2 flanges held together by 4 bolts. Today I saw that 3 bolts were broken off so that makes it next to impossible to rotate the track frame because the broken bolts are still in the flanges. I don'tnow what clamp you are referring to in the rear. Only clamp I see is the one holding the cross tube onto the crawler itself.Any information appreciated.

440 track frame removal

Thanks Lavoy. Sorry Denny. I didn't realize there were 2 differant undercarriages for the 440. I believe my 440ICD is the same as my 1010C. Sounds like the early 440 is the same as the 420. gregjo1948

No, early 440 is same front and back, later 440 is like 1010 on the back with the two round clamps and the shaft goes through the trackframe.

I had one that came apart easy and one that was impossible to get apart. I would try the bottle jack and if you have acces to an electrect jack hammer put a piece of metal between it and your track frame and see if you can jar it loose. They can really be froze up.

Yep good luck. Mine is really froze too. The big problem is, the rust has pushed the track frame out about 1/4" so the inside of my sprocket occasionally brushes the inside of the rearmost roller.
I tried getting it loose but not luck. I'm hoping running it some and the machine bouncing around will loosen it up.
Keep us posted on what works.
