Hi all,

My father has a 58 440ic (i checked the serial number). He has owned this machine for probably 20 years. I remember the first few years it worked well and was used rarely. Then it came down with some ailment, I believe a issue with the steering clutch, and was parked. Guessing that was 10ish years ago.

I am now in a position where I have enough knowledge to repair this machine. As well as a place to use it. So my dad so I can go ahead and take it home.

What I know for sure about the machine.
-The owner previous to my dad rebuilt the engine
-The track adjusters are all the way out
-Supposed problem with one of the steering clutches
-Needs battery

Now I know this thing is going to take some work to get going again. And realistically it is in pretty rough shape. But it's free to me and I have no plans of restoring it or doing any type of heavy work with it. So I feel it will be worthwhile to fix it back to operating condition.

The first task will be simply repairing the ignition system and throwing a battery in it. Then if I can get it started I can load it up and bring it home to fix the rest.

My first question is simply what voltage is the battery? I remember it being 6v however my dad remembers it being 12v.

Thanks for any and all advice. I will post some pics here when I get it home and keep this thread updated with my progress.

If original, 6 volt, positive ground. Gil

look at the gen. or the reg. one should say what voltage you have

Correct. It is a gas engine.

Well I was able to bring her home today

In our first real snow of the year, towed home 70 miles on back roads, without incident.

Cleaned the points and cap/rotor. Threw a battery into it and a quick shot of either she was running.

Electrical system is a mess. Definitely a 12v starter as the 6v battery I bought wouldn't budge it. However the coil is 6v. I couldn't see any markings on the generator.

It moves well enough to get it onto a trailer. Only turns right though, when I pull the left lever it just stops and quits moving forward. To me this means the drive clutch on the right track is slipping. Am I thinking the right way?

Also both adjusters are definitely all the way out. It has never thrown a track that I know of so there is still hope. Are there wear parts other then the pins a bushings to look at first? Or am a stuck with re-bushing the track to get it back in spec? The gears actually look pretty good to me but I don't know what a bad one looks like.

I should be able to throw pics up tomorrow.

If anyone can see from these pictures anything major wrong with the undercarriage please point it out.

I'm at a crossroads at this point. I know this machine needs quite a bit of work. And I don't necessarily have a lot of use for it. I'm thinking it may be best to put it up for sale rather then try to get it back into good operating shape.

So please point out as many things as you can see wrong so I have a better idea what I would be getting into should I decide to keep it.

hi boardrider 247, the chain and pads don't look too bad (can't see the bushings from the pics), but you will need to measure across 5 pins to check for wear ( there are posts on this site that explains how to do it). the front idlers are definetly getting thin ( on the flats where the chain rides). those can be built up with flat stock ( like .250" x 1"). you will need to get inside that right final to see what is going on. set the adjustment properly and if it still slips then it will need to come off. when you look inside the final see if there moisture or oil on the clutches. if it's oil you will be looking at replacing seals and clutch discs( at the very least). the rear sprockets have some wear but will probably be ok if you are only using the machine occasionally. hope this helps! good luck and keep us posted as to your progress!
