420 trans reassembly problem
420 trans reassembly problem
so i'm attemping to reassemble my trans on my 420c. the input shaft and power shaft are assembled and in the case. put the pinion shaft in and placed all the gears on according to the servie manual. the pinion shaft will not line up in the to get the bearing on. it seems like the 4th gear driven gear will not clear the 5th speed gear on the input shaft. it has to be something small, i've followed the book to a "T". i'm racking my brain here guys. anybody have any thoughts??

The only thing I can think of with out looking at it is that you may have one on backwards. As you slide the pinion shaft in, slide the gears on starting with 2nd and reverse the larger of the two towards the rear of the case then slide the shaft in more just past the cluster gears on the input shaft then install the 1st and 5th gear on with the slot for the shift fork facing the front of the case then slide the shaft a little further and install the 3rd and 4th gear on with the slot for the shift fork facing the rear of the case. That should work. You may want to drop your shifter on and turn the input shaft to see if you can get all the gears to work before you go any further. Good luck

okay i will try turning the 1st / 5th gear around...the manual shows the shift collar to the rear of the case. the 3rd and 4th gear have a collar that slides between them and its just not alowing the 4th gear to clear the 5th gear on the input shaft. i have the bearing and race in on the power shaft should i take it out until i get all 3 shafts in?? i will take some pics tomorrow if i cant get it figured out.

You are right that the 1st and 5th shift collar should be to the rear of the case. I believe that the power shaft should be installed first then the input shaft and the pinion shaft so removing the barring shouldn't be an issue. Before installing the pinion shaft have you checked to se if the PTO engages properly and that the gears on the other shafts are on the shafts in the right sequence?

so finally got all the gears in the tranny. ripped everything apart and started all over again from scratch. got everything reassembled and had the same problem. removed the bearing and last gear on the input shaft allowing me to lift it up and over about 1" still nothing. i put the castle nut on the pinion shaft so i could rotate the entire assembly back and forth and it just dropped right in. couldnt believe it. so if anyone is having issues with a 420 5 speed trans shoot me a message i'm sure i can help since i can reassemble one of these in about 5 min blindfolded. Ha. frustrating for awhile but like the rest of the project gave me alot of opportunity to spend time with my grandpap. now we can really start on putting this crawler back together.
