831 loader- What to use for hydraulic fluid?

Post by 10fords » Thu Mar 14, 2013 9:54 pm

I finally got my free 440icd hauled home and am in the process of sorting things out after it sat for 12 to 30 years (depending on the day, the old timer who gave it to me had different recollections). The really heavy right side lift cylinder has a bad hose so I am replacing both hoses and changing the fluid. Will the general purpose wal mart hydraulic fluid that I use in my log splitter work, or do I need something more specific? Thanks- Scott

There are a number of specific brand names for it, but it's commonly called universal tractor fluid (UTF). Most brands of UTF state they are compatible with JD 303 spec, which was the original specified fluid when the 440 came out. As Richard said, you don't need to worry about using Deere HyGard for the loader system.
(1) JD Straight 450 crawler dozer with manual outside blade; (2) JD 2010 diesel crawler loaders; (1) JD 2010 diesel dozer with hydraulic 6-way blade; (2) Model 50 backhoe attachments, misc. other construction equipment

Thanks guys. It will take awhile, but I can't wait to get this old iron back in service! Next will be the engine oil and fuel filter. Are these JD specific parts, or is there a crossover for Napa? Thanks- Scott
