Carb question

Is there supposed to be something in this hole? Tsx777 carb. Looks like a piece of brass jammed down there. Engine will only idle with mixture all the way in.

That is a vent hole.
Open to the air filter side of the carb.

One of the jets is at the bottom of that hole. If it doesn't look like a jet, that might be your problem. It takes a good screwdriver to get it out.

Then I must be missing something, because every TSX carb I have ever rebuilt has a a jet at the bottom of that hole. The jet visible in the pic is the idle jet, the one at the bottom of the hole is the economizer jet. On a TSX 777 it is part number 49-258 under 448,000, above is T12652. The brass you are seeing at the bottom of the hole is the jet itself. If you can not see a deifinte hole, or screwdriver slot in the jet, someone had tried to take it out in the past and wrecked it. Only fix is to drill the jet out and put in a new one.

I am assuming the hole in question is the one the pin is pointing at...

Yes that is the economizer jet down there. You might want to buy a new one now and use it to guide you in removing the old one. You might be able to still screw it out, but Lavoy is probably correct that you will have to drill it out. If so, I would use a dull drill bit that will still cut the brass but have less chance to damage carburetor body. Good luck. Gil

I don't remember the thread pitch, but it is a common thread if you need to drill out the old one. Also if you haven't, take out the idle jet and blow through with carb cleaner and watch all the holes in the throat to see if liquid comes out. I had one that had a small piece of something stuck in one of the holes blocking it.
