oil to valve train on 440ic

Post by brampton6626 » Tue Mar 26, 2013 7:32 am

just rebuilt 2 cyl gas engine on 440ic. wanted to prime oil pump before installing in machine, tried turning flywheel by hand hoping to lubricate everything before fireing up, no oil to valve train, maybe can't turn fast enough by hand to get enough psi?. any thoughts. great forum

It takes a long time to get oil to the valve train, it is just a trickle. Pour oil on rocker shaft, arms, valves and such, and you will be good to go.

Lucas works well too.
Stays on the parts longer than oil.
The oil filter has to fill up first before oil goes anywhere else. This is why it takes so long to see oil up top in the valve train.
Time to design a replacement filter with a check valve to keep the oil in it.

Wide portion to the transmission otherwise it will drag on the flywheel. Remember to set the fingers with the JD7 gauge prior to mounting the engine back on the crawler.
