Mouse turds question

Post by MarkW » Sat Apr 06, 2013 8:48 pm

Like pretty much everyone else I had the "run for a few seconds then die" issue back when I rebuilt my injector pump. fortunately I was able to back a trailer right up to it so I only had to get 2 good cycles to get it on the trailer.

The other day I was wondering however, about the technique with breaking the check valve to get it home, and I was wondering whether in that situation instead of doing anything with the check valve could you just loosen the timing cover, if that were just cracked open would it do the same thing except have the diesel drain out instead of going through the return?

Hopefully I'll never have to deal with one again, but if loosening the cover will allow it to drive out of a situation or on to a trailer it would be handy to know.

Well, I certainly never gave it much thought but I would say that you are probably right. I would also think however that you could just remove the fitting and let the fuel either just flow out like you said or try to come up with a fitting that would allow you to temporarily dump it into a can or back to the return as usual. I personally was always hesitant about breaking the valve in the first place but in a given situation where you need to move the machine I can see where it would be necessary. This does give a guy something to think about though... Good point! :)

It would certainly be more convenient, not to mention a simple way to troubleshoot if you could back the screws of 1/2 turn and if it doesn't die then you can decide whether to start looking at the pump instead of other fuel delivery issues. I could see trying to contain the fuel if you needed to move it an appreciable distance but the way my luck usually works things die when they are blocking the vicinity in the most awkward way possible, or at least it seems that way most times!
