420c steering clutch free travel

Post by Kws346 » Sat Apr 13, 2013 1:39 pm

How much free travel should the steering levers have on 420c? If the steering levers were set to an incorrect amount of free travel could this prevent the dozer from moving?

The book says 1-5/16 to 1-7/16 of free travel measured from the bottom of the grip to the dash panel. The steering levers when pulled stops the power to the final drive If the engine is running and it is in gear including the reverser if you have one and it doesn't move I would check the engine clutch, its free travel should be 1'' at the top of the petal.
Good luck. Ron

Thanks for the info. What is the reverser that you mentioned.

The reverser was optional and were first available on the 420s It allows you to back up in the same gear you went forward in. Its mounted in the center frame a head of the transmission. The shift lever would be on the right or left depending on witch reverser you have Deere changed them in late 1958 from a gear unit to a wet clutch one.
