I am looking at a 1960 440IC with a 831 loader (sn # 458613). It has 932 hours on the tach (don't know if it still works) and looks in fairly good shape. The engine clutch froze so they pulled it out of the shed to work on it around 20 years ago and there it sits. New bushings, pins and maybe rails were put on over 20 years ago. The bushings show very little wear compared to the front idler frame rails. Supposedly the engine was overhauled 25 years ago. The hood is in the shed. I have attached some pictures I took last night. I had only asked permission to look at it and do not know if I can buy it yet. Any ideas on how much I should offer?

Very nice rails, sprockets are good, looks like a good restorer. Keep in mind, if it had been outside that many years, trans and such may be full of water. Steering clutches are also likely ruined, but that is something that I replace anyway, so not a big deal, just keep in mind the cost and time.
I guess my figure would be in the $1000-$1500 range.

You should figure on replacing idlers and rollers. The left spocket doesn't look good enough to run on nearly new pin/bushings. The motor will probably need to be torn down.(set up?) Wirng looks rough and alternator is possibly no good. Along with what Lavoy stated, it's going to be a lot of parts cost and a lot of repair labor. I wouldn't want to invest over $1000.00. I think it might make a great parts machine. gregjo1948

Rails
If it were close, and in the 1,500 range it would already be in my yard.
What's a decent set of rails worth these days? The rest could go in the scrap pile

Thanks for the ideas. I found out from the other son that it has only sat outside 3 years, probably still enough time to trash the clutches and seize the engine. I will let you know if I am able to buy it and if I decide to part it out. Is the reverser on the later 440 a wet or dry clutch?

All 440's are wet clutch reverser.
