You can tell that it is a fresh overhaul, the cardboard "paint curtains" are still in the area.
For starters, I would love to know where he located all of the correct parts to completely overhaul a 1010 gas crawler.

Engine parts are current from Deere, but in the $3000 minimum range for a complete job. Add in $3000 or more in undercarriage at least. Seems like a lot, but you couldn't do one yourself for that, assuming it is completely done.

"Over $22,000 invested", guess he did not get a good deal on parts or the restoration mechanic stiffed him?

I guess I would kind of take offense to that, on a full complete restoration on a 1010 with that much work done, I would easily be in that range, and my labor rate is probably half to one fourth of what any of the bigger restorers would charge.
Engine rebuild alone would be at least $4000 with Deere parts and machine work combined, not including any externals. Undercarriage would be $5000 at minimum. Final drive and steering clutches $1500/side if any bad gears. Trans and reverser could eat up $1000 each if any major parts involved. All of a sudden you are at $14,000 and we don't have labor or incidentals.

Crawlers with a lot of money in them are almost impossible to sell unless you take a real bath, I would guess he is going to own that one for a long while.

Far as I'm concerned it will be essentially a new machine with the 6-way hyd blade I installed.
Told my wife to bury it with me . LOL
It's better to seek forgivness than to ask for permission...

No question that a lot of money can be spent getting these back up and going.
If you rebuild the 2-53 yourself, it can be done pretty low cost.
You will never need a set of tracks again!
Have fun.

To me if you are going to keep the machine and did none of the work with the idea of selling it, do it right, then you are done. When the wife digs the grave with it, the boyfriend will have a nice crawler to play with afterwards.
