Drain and Fill for Transmission

I took out what I believe to be the fill plug for the trasmission for my 1956 420. Whwn it was removed the oil started to run out which I think means there is probably water in the tranny. I cannot find the drain plug Help me please. First issue.

One of the cylinders for the blade leaks so I went to by hydraulic oil to refill the tank. I bought TDH oil which I did not ask about since it said hydraulic on the bottle. Well it is red as compare to the regular hydraulic I am used tom that is amber. Is it usable for old hydraulic systems or should I return it.

Drain plug is LH side of trans case, kind of below your left foot.
Not sure on the hyd fluid, but don't judge it on color, go by what the jug says. If it is hyd fluid, you are fine.

Just a question that might apply: Can Hydraulic oil be mixed with straight 20w oil that may be in the hydraulic system? thanks.

To add some info that I found out. TDH oil is a transmission, hydraulic oil that is used in newer equipment that have the same tank for hydraulic systems and transmission.

While it won't hurt anything, in my experience, they howl more, and lose about 100PSI in pressure compared to a straight hyd oil.

I run hytran in the hydraulics of my 40c, its what I had on hand. Yup, it squeals some but seems to work fine.

Sorry, I might not have qualified that well enough, I was talking about hyd, not trans.

Thanks for the info. I've been running straight 20 w oil in my hydraulics since I originally followed the manual and used 20 w oil in the engine and hydraulics when I first bought the machine and changed out all the fluids; its convenient to only have to keep one oil on hand.

I've since changed to 15-40 Rotella in the engine and have noticed less consumption and no winter starting problems and the engine oil pressure stays in range.

As far as the hydraulics, I find the 20w oil works fine, is available locally, and since it's still clear in my machine, I don't have a reason to switch. I wasn't sure if a hydraulic system with 20w oil would like being topped off with hydraulic oil. Paul

Should work fine, I run a 20wt hyd for the most part, sometimes a 30wt, but not in something that is used in cold weather. I would think they would blend fine and not hurt a thing.

I think the manual says to use 30 wt. engine oil in the hyd system of my '53 40c. Are you saying HyTran would be better?

In my opinion it would be worse from a noise and pressure standpoint, but I highly doubt any damage will occor.
