40 or 420

Post by bubba » Tue Aug 06, 2013 5:45 pm

I have what I think is a 40c, when I bought it, there was faded 40 on the grill frame, but it also has a water pump. Someplace I have read that 40's don't have a water pump. It has no id plate on it. what are some other ways to tell what it is maybe year? did someone put a water pump on it, or they change the motor? any help would be greatful

1" pins, 1 9/16" busings, 3/4" bolts hold the track frames on, if it is a little later 420, 4 bolts hold the side frames to clutch housings, hyd lever has two linkage rods to the hyd valve, tachometer, to name a few.

Bubba,
The engine could have been swapped out.Beside the things Lavoy
has pointed out a dead giveaway is the thickness of the two crossbars
attached to the track frames. The 40c bars are around 2 1/8" thick
and the 420 bars are 2 1/2" thick.Luck,JimAnderson

I believe some of the early 420's had the non gusseted finals,
but they often were replaced by the newer style.I have a very early
40c that was upgraded with many 420 components and I'm sure
that many of them were.Without a serial number tag it can be difficult
to tell if a machine is a 40 or a 420.I only mention the cross bar difference because it is probably one of the few parts that would not
be upgraded due to failure or wear.Luck,JimAnderson

I want to thank everyone for the info.
I have gotten heartbroken now, I was hoping it was a 40 but with all the info I now believe it to be a 420. that's ok too
again thanks to everyone
