Straight 450 main clutch, 11 or 12?
Straight 450 main clutch, 11 or 12?
Help
I have the main clutch removed on my JD 450 (no letter) crawler. The release bearing managed to grind and melt the three fingers on the pressure plate. I was thinking that it was because I did not grease the bearing, but now not so sure. Several sources tell me that I should have a 11" clutch plate, but it is definitely 12". All parts seemed pretty new, probably installed just before I bought it. I Googled it and found a picture of my pressure plate, an exact replica, but marketed as a steering clutch plate Part number AT18416.

So what is going on? Did the previous owner use a steering clutch for the main clutch? (Am surprised that it fit). My clutch plate is also 12". I would like to get by without buying a new plate, the most expensive part.
They sell a 12" disk, part number A-AT315827; so what is the correct pressure plate for that?
Can I switch back to an 11" pressure plate and clutch?

The John Deere parts site http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com. ... ervlet_Alt
lists 2 different engine clutches. One doesn’t specify the size. The other is 279MM (11in).
If you need parts Lavoy, the owner of this site, can help.

When you look at the JD Parts website, Part number AT18416 is a steering clutch plate. There are a number of clutch and pressure plate part numbers for the 450 depending on whether you have the constant mesh transmission or HLR transmission, and then some substitution part numbers within those part listings. I didn't see the A-AT315827 part number you listed in a record search.
Since we don't know what part supplier has been giving you these numbers and where they are getting them from, I would recommend checking with Lavoy and give him your 450's serial number as well as transmission type so he can help sort this out for you.

Thanks,
I tried to call two places that are in the business and each went to message with no return call. I did speak to the local Deere dealer and learned exactly what you said Oljoe, that there were two types, 11 inch and unspecified. Mine was twelve inch so I was left with a bit of uncertainty. Meanwhile I have found part number AT29610 which fits the description.
My next question is about the release bearing. obviously it was designed to be greased, but there is a sealed bearing available. Is that better?
I hope to get the chance to call Lavoy, I doubt he would appreciate it at this hour.

i see two different clutches one is 11" and is for the HLR trans. and the other is ??? for size and is for the constant mesh which trans do you have? as for the throw out just use the standard one and "Grease" !! it as you are suppose to .... it still has a hose on it??
2010 with 622 dozer with mod. 35 ripper and a 2010 with 622 dozer bought in 1969 and a 2010 loader with drott and mod. 36 ripper
I have made contact with Lavoy. We have concluded that I must have the constant mesh simply because a 12" came out of it. If I don't even know what kind of transmission I have, you expect me to know to grease the throw-out bearing? Thanks to all for a happy conclusion. This machine has been great fun for two years. I pulled a lot of root balls, planted a few, and moved my front yard to my back yard. But now I must bid it adieu once I get it back together, Already have it sold to a neighbor in need. Will miss it.

I believe your serial number data plate (if still intact) would allow you to confirm which transmission you have. It should be similar to "T5C3MxxxxxxT". The third digit could vary depending on whether a bare crawler/dozer/loader and the fourth digit could be a "1" instead of "3" if your crawler is gas instead of diesel.
The fifth digit ("M" in my example) is the one that tells you your tansmission- if a "M" then you have the HLR transmission and if a "C" then you have the constant mesh transmision.
Just to round out, the next six digits are the serial number (so you can identify year and submodel) and the "T" at the end is the manufatcuring plant (T is for JD Dubuque Tractor Works).

does it have any trans pressure and temp gauges? if it has JD temp and press gauges then it would be HLR not constant mesh ....yours has a hoe is it loader also?on 2010 ALL loaders had HLR if it is HLR then the clutch does not get used near as much...
