Glow Plugs
Glow Plugs
Couldn't get my 1010 started, tried everything and then bought all new glow plugs, started just once, started right up lots of black smoke when it started just like it always did before I replaced all the glow plugs. Now I have the same problemas before, turns over, never kicks, only white smoke. my glow plugs seem to all be bad again? the first time they went I assumed it was because I used ether, but not this time . What would make all the glow plugs burn out at once?? It is a 12 volt system, just one battery, the glow plug I took out is not even warm when I connect it to a battery. I hate to buy all new glow plugs and then find out they get fried angain. anyone have any Ideas? I did replace all the wiring but I have 12V at all the plugs.
Thanks Tony
What brand of glow plugs did you buy? Read the thread below as it makes a difference:

Still having trouble with my glow plugs, use them once, work great and then find them burnt out on the next start up. I think I may have found the problem.....the john deere parts catalogue lists a connector part number AL-2976 T and an adaptor part # AT 16768T. Does anybody know if these are anything other than connectors possibly a resister that will keep me from cooking the glow plugs?
Thanks Tony
Each plug should take 12 volts, no resistor needed. If they burn out that quick, something else is up assuming they are not defective glow plugs.

I agree with gregjo, sounds like the glow plugs are never turning off.
It could be something in the ignition switch went bad and the contact to turn on the glow plugs is welded closed.
I believe the glow plugs should only work when the key is turned counter clockwise and maybe in the start position.
Check for your 12volts like you normally do with the key in the "Glow plug" position.
Then put the key in the "Run" position and see if you still have 12volts. You shouldn't have 12volts in the Off or Run positions.

Yes on all the time is a good call and quite possible .. BEN the original switch does preheat to the left AND in the start position..... the only other thing i could think of is where are you getting the plugs? a lot of plugs for like GM are 6 volt i don't know if any of those will thread in just a thought
2010 with 622 dozer with mod. 35 ripper and a 2010 with 622 dozer bought in 1969 and a 2010 loader with drott and mod. 36 ripper
I would also lean towards the bad ignition switch issue, although brand of glow plugs you bought may play a part in this. The OEM glow plugs are crap as mentioned in the previous thread I posted for you.
Also when you created a new wiring harness, did you wire the glow plugs in series or parallel?

I agree that is true for a standard wiring harness but since he wired his own harness not sure if he kept the OEM wiring configuration- he could have wired between them.
