I bought the parts John Deere 420C I was looking at. He wanted to keep the radiator he found for it, and a water pump off the bad engine. Gave $200 for it, delivered. Has a nice Blade. While looking at the somewhat disassembled machine, I had a small but startling epiphany.
Looking at the parts manual and looking at the machine, it clicked in my head that in order to disassemble the shaft that the brake and clutch pedals ride on, I'm going to have to seperate the crawler.
Am I correct on that ? I'm still waiting on a 40C manual which shows how to disassemble the center section, but that is the only conclusion I can arrive at.
Some I'm guessing:
- drop the tracks, drop the final drives, split at the center
On one of the OLD David Brown's I've worked on, I know I had to pull the engine before the torque tube could be worked on. Do I need to pull the engine on a 420C ?
Split a 420C to Replace the Engine Clutch Foot Pedal ?
I have a 440ICD/831 (loader) that has the left brake- clutch shafts stuck together one runs inside the other and thru the reverser (center section) and am trying to inject Kroil penetrating oil into them to free them. It is my understanding the engine and reverser (center section) need to be removed to get room to get the shafts out if I cannot free them. No need to split the crawler or tracks. I think.

I think shinnery is right.
The reason you have to split is so that the shafts will slide out.
You may be able to get away with taking the side frames off. I'm not sure how a 420 is assembled but I think you could do it on a 440.
That is actually how I assembled mine. I had my motor and trans and everything all together and slid it into the undercarriage. I had to take one side-frame off to have enough clearance. It worked out pretty well actually.

No need to drop tracks or finals, they have no effect on that shaft. Pull the engine first, it is easier in the long run. Then split it at the trans and lift out.
