2-53 wont start
2-53 wont start
I have a jd 440 crawler that sat for a few years.. I Bought new injectors timed them I checked the blower and it still works good. The motor turns over nice the stack has alittle white smoke coming from it , I even tried alittle starting fluid in the blower to see if it would fire and Still doesn't do anything. When I had injectors out I turned the motor over to see if I could feel any compression coming out the top of the injector holes and they seemed to have a good amount . I don't have a compression tester though so I couldn't test with out buying a kit. ANY Suggestions on how to get this diesel going would be greatly appreciated.....

Something is odd, it should fire with a small amount of ether whether there is fuel or not.
Valves adjusted correctly?

I tried tuning it to .011 because the Detroit manual I have said to .011 I thought it was weird though because It was quite a few turns on the valve stem and I wouldn't have imagined it being that far off. Maybe it should be something else? I read online some where that it should be .027 for 53 series engines? it wasn't specific on if it was for my 2-53 or not.

Well, my manual grew legs, so I guess I can't help you for now, sorry. IF it ever decides to come home, I will ask it.

Injectors have fuel coming out of them when cracked, so that tells me fuel pump is working. It may be the exhaust valves like lavoy suggests. I am not certain I have the rocker arm up all the way. I will have to look at the manual again.. see if I notice anything..

Still seems like it should at least fire on ether if it has compression. If you can get it to fire, then you are pretty sure it is a fuel problem. I had trouble on that last one I had where the suction line to the pump was collapsing internally and was starving it for fuel.

Hey guys, Rack or Control Tube is moving freely but needs to be readjusted once I get the motor running. I believe I got a exhaust valve problem but im not 100 percent on if it was adjusted right. I will have to try again next weekend on Tuning the valves. Does any one know of a way to check and see that the valves are seating properly...??

Compression test would be my only guess.

You could pull the head and inspect. Might want to touch up the valves & seats as long as you have it down. gregjo1948

.011 is the correct setting for 2-53 (2 valve) ..what you see on line(.024) is for the 4 valve 53 series engines...... PS there are NO intake valves on a 2-53 Detroit or any 53/71/92 series two stroke Detroit diesels (AKA Yamaha's)
