reverser only works in reverse?
My Jd 440 Icd Yesterday Stopped Driving Forward. But When I Put The ReverseR In Reverse It Works Fine. I Tried Every Gear In Forward And None Work. I Had Go Put The Reverser In Reverse And The Trany In Reverse Just So I Could Move It Forward. Does Anyone Have Any Idea What This Means?
If the reverser lever does not "snap" when shifted forward, as has been stated it is slipping and needs to be tightened up.
If the reverser has been shifted without using the foot clutch, it has peeled the tabs off of the clutch discs and needs to be rebuilt.

so my reverser is shot so I pulled everything out and im just going to straight shaft it. what all do I need to do this? do I just get a coupler that slides over both shafts and set my set screw and call it a day? how do I stop my front shaft from sliding back ? it cant slide forward because of the bearing but it seems like it could like back

I think to go straight shaft, the front shaft is longer.
There is a splined coupling to connect both shafts, however one shaft and coupling is drilled all the way through for a roll pin.
There's suppose to be a small spring that goes inside the coupling (sits between the shafts). I think that's what keeps the front shaft from coming back too far. I for some reason couldn't put that spring in mine, it crushed the spring and bound everything up.

Reverser
The coupling shaft you need to bypass the reverser is 21-3/4" long.
The coupling is pinned to the transmission shaft and the small spring
keeps the input shaft in its proper place. The bearing needs to be removed from reverser case input quill. That quill keeps the bellhousing
and reverser in alignment so don't leave it off.A lot of machines are
out there using the reverser input shaft instead of the correct shaftbut it is shorter by almost 3/4".With that big a diference it is easy to destroy
the shaft and coupling splines.Luck,JimAnderson

If I read Page 25-3 of the 440ICD parts catalog (PC-0609) correctly, the spring you need is Part # M1309Tckutz1985 wrote:DoEs Anyone Here Know Where I Could Buy One Of These Springs?
This spring appears to have been used in other applications such as the 450 crawler and Deere appears to still stock it for $8.82. Lavoy (the admin on this site and also a parts supplier) may also carry it.
The shaft you would need (propellor shaft) is part # T10383T
I couldn't tell from the parts website if it is still available (I think my company is blocking access) but that way Lavoy or other can check availability for you.
For future reference, the parts catalog for your model machine and others can be viewed at this link:
http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com. ... ervlet_Alt
The parts manual on that site for your machine is a PDF (described on that site as 609 - 440 ICD industrial crawler diesel tractor).

Yes the spring is current from Deere, that's where I got mine.
If you knew someone that could weld good, would you be able to cut that shaft and extend it?
I'm no metallurgist or machinist so I don't know how strong it would be. I suppose you may be able to cut it, drill and tap both pieces and put a grade 8 stud to bind the to pieces together AND then weld it up. Just thoughts.

I'm thinking it might be hardened and welding it would not work well. gregjo1948

There are no new shafts, used only, don't think I have any left. Coupling is $225 new now. Why not fix the reverser?
