1010 value
Hi guys I'm looking for some advice. I have a 1010 industrial straight push with close to 4 thousand in it.About 50% under carriage, new electronic ignition. Machine I all there and ran great when it did (about 2 yers ago).My mechanic believes it's interal and wants to pull the engine in his shop. What I need to know is how much l should invest in this machine to what it's worth.Any and all input would be great. Thanks in advance.
Value varies in different areas of the country and also on condition, but you already have in it approximately what it is worth, maybe even a little upside down on it. However there are other considerations on value depending on how much is wrong with it, as you would likely have to spend more than that to get another decent running crawler.
BTW, why does the mechanic think it is an internal engine issue when it ran great previosuly? Does it not even crank and is stuck? If not that wouldn't be the first thing I would suspect. If you can give us more specifics on what happens when you try to start it that would help to troubleshoot.

It turns over, good spark, did get it to start but only about 30 seconds.he thinks there's a sheared keyway thats causes it to lose it's timing.dose that make sense?keep in mind that this is second hand info.im tying to remember.
Be in love
I think you have to be in love with the machine, then it doesn't matter how much you spend on it. If you enjoy it - either using it or showing it off - then fix what needs to be fixed and have at it.
Its not an investment, if it is, its a poor one.
I had a 1010 and it was a good machine and i never should have sold it. Engine parts might be a little more but its a nice running engine.
Another way to approach it is figure $50/hr for its machine use. If you get 200 hours work out of it, then that should otherwise be worth $10,000 so you could theoretically spend another $6,000, do 200 hours work and then park it in the front yard and you're square.
But money is no object when you ar ein love.

I don't know what key he is refering to. I would sooner think it is a fuel problem. Pull the plugs out and crank it over watching for spark. Pull the carb off and give it a good cleaning.Check your fuel fines and filter. If you're running 30 seconds, i 'm guessing that you're using starting fluid and it dies after that burns up. gregjo1948

I would second the fuel issue, and if I remember right the gas 1010s use a Marvel-Schebler carburetor and over the years that carb has been a real pain on my Ford 8N tractor.
I assume you are getting fuel to the sediment bowl- if not then a clogged outlet at the tank. If you do have fuel at the bowl, first check to see if you are getting fuel to the carb in the line at the carb inlet and also at the cylinders- you can pull a spark plug and you should be able to smell fuel after cranking. If you have fuel at the carb inlet but not in the cylinders, it's likely the carb.
My guess would be a stuck float or needle- that always would be a problem if it sat for any length of time because it would get gummed up. I would tap (lightly but firmly)the carb bowl with a small hammer to see if you can free it up before you start taking it apart. The other point of issue on those carbs is the carb inlet elbow- they can get gummed up as well.
For your sake I hope that is the issue. That would be a lot easier fix than what your mechanic wants to do

We have a few 2010 gas tractors at the far. Had somewhat of the same problem, but they'd run a little longer. Ended up being a dead fly in the gas tank and it would get over top of the outlet and run it out of gas.
Also, this may sound dumb but it's often overlooked, make sure you have an adequate amount of fuel in the tank to get it going.

Thanks for all the response. We've trouble shooted 9 ways to sunday.early on we rebuilt old carb, would'nt draw fuel so I bought a new one.a zenith match witch the mech. Says is a dud so he tinkered with the old one and got it to draw, fire run a little that's it.I know it sounds strange but we been around and around with this .new starter, ignition system, cleaned tank and line, also checked manifold gasket and compression. Just can't get it right.

What did it have for compression? Will it run while feeding it starting fluid into the carb? We need more info to help! gregjo1948

Hi JD, we're not trying to be pushy about this but it is really hard to believe that this would be an internal engine issue when nothing apparently happened to cause the non-running condition other than sitting for a while. We just want to save you money over something drastic like an engine rebuild.
There are a number of threads you can read on this board using the search function about these carburetors as well as electronic ignition. Many (though not all) of the board members that have tried electronic ignition have had some issues with it working properly and some have even reverted back to points. Also with the M-S carbs, there are several adjustment screws that have to be adjusted correctly in a particular order or the engine will not run correctly. I wouldn't suspect that as the main factor at this point because they would have to be really off to not have the engine fire at all, but it could be a contributing factor.
When you have a chance it would be interesting to hear the compression results from the testing as that should be pretty telling on whether you truly have an internal engine issue.
