40C Idler wheel shaft thread size?

Post by Bret4207 » Mon Oct 21, 2013 6:31 am

Title says it pretty much. Need to chase out the idler wheel shaft threads, need to know the original size. Amazing what 60 years of siting does to threads!

Lavoy, tried it and my shaft is way bigger than 3/4". My largest die is 1" and it was shy by a good bit. I'm thinking 1 1/8" maybe. I'm talking the front idler wheel on a 3 roll.

Sorry, I assumed 4 or 5 roller. I don't know what thread that is, it is tapered like NPT, so I am not sure it is any sort of standard thread.

You could try 1" or 1 1/8" NPT, but that is purely a guess, be careful.

Just an update- appears they are 1 1/8"-12NF. Gotta beg a loner tap and die someplace to chase threads.

The threads should have a taper to them.

1 1/8" tapered sounds like 3/4" pipe ...3/4" pipe OD is around 1" to 1 1/8"

3/4" NPT shows to have a 1.050 OD. and 14 TPI. At least that is what google tells me. If he runs a 1 1/8-12 tap thru it there will sure be no taper left then.

Updated update! 1 1/4"-12, no taper at all. My measurement was off from the galling that occurred taking it apart.
