440ICD oil pressure

Post by scampr » Tue Oct 29, 2013 5:25 pm

Bad day yesterday and it got worse when i had to start the 440 that hasnt been run for a few months and was supprised to see no oil pressure. Pulled the line off the block and no pressure there too... Before i start ripping and tearing.... anyone have any thoughts. It usually ran 40 PSI cold and 30 warm.. so this wasnt expected. Thanks...

This is your 2-53 diesel I presume? You have checked it is full of oil? The oil filter is just a bypass system on them. You might pull the valve cover and see if the exhaust valves and rockers are getting oiled.

Drop the pan and check the oil pump drive key.

440 ICD's oil pump is behind the front cover.
May have lost prime?
How long did you run it?

I saw that in the book... I havent dove into it yet.. ran it long enough to test it .Just was looking at it again and found i was checking the pressure on the return side to the block so will do a little more research but even on the return side i should have had oil coming out the unconnected line. :( I think before i dive into the front i will drop the pan first and check the pickup. Thanks its always nice to hear other ideas before you dive in.

Wouldn't hurt to pull the oil pressure plug and check the spring and valve.
With this off you could crank just a bit to see if oil is flowing at that point too.

Glad you found your problem, and that it wasn't too difficult to fix.

My dad, a pretty good mechanic, used to say that we usually expect/predict the worst when something malfunctions or breaks down. He'd keep that option on the table, but then looked for simpler causes, or root problems and solutions and usually he found one.
That wisdom has saved me a bit of money and extra effort over the years.
