Moving a 420c

Post by Cletrac68 » Thu Nov 14, 2013 3:12 pm

This would apply any tractor with a loader. The 420c we found has an aftermarket loader. Right now it won't start and will have to be winched on to a trailer to get it home. We will have to manually raise the bucket in order to move the machine. What the best way to hold the lift arm cylinders in the 'up' position while transporting ? Thanks.

Generally I would not transport a crawler with the loader boom raised, even if it needed to be raised initially to get it on the trailer. My reasoning is that it raises the center of gravity for the crawler and as a result could make the trailer "tippier" on turns as well as raising your overall trailer height if that is an issue. It also potentially draws the attention of DOT.

However when we have discussed bracing of loader arms in the context of working on a stationary crawler, the solution is generally heavy angle iron that is restrained/chained to each boom cylinder to prevent movement or slippage. There are a number of threads discussing this you can find in a search.

I agree 100 percent.Never transport with the loader arms raised. It can
be a pain to raise the loader frame to get it off the trailer but it is
safer and as said the DOT won't be as inclined to harass you.

Maybe we will remove bucket to lesson the weight. I do realize the center of gravity would be higher. Only going 2 miles on a rural road. Thanks for the advice.

You only need to raise it about 4 feet I don't think you should have any trouble with that it is more stable on the floor but if your careful you should be all right like they said heavy angle secured will hold it make sure you have some one holding the valve in the up position as you raise it up

Can you winch it on backwards with a chain dragging under the bucket, then drag it off with that chain?

--with a bungie cord?

seems like a possible solution that will allow the bucket to float getting on and off and keep a low center of gravity when traveling.

Thanks for the input. We got it home. Only had raise bucket 3 feet to clear the ramps (deck over trailer). We use a hand cable winch and snatch block to pull it on the trailer With loader est. 5500 lbs. See pics in the photo section.

Any one interested in the loader ...... it's all one piece bolted to the crossbars-includes fenders, controls and seat mount. Looks like Greenville Steel Car Mfg - but not sure.

Nice looking machine. That loader looks pretty stout. The only thing I
noticed you might want to address is that the track are on backwards.
Nice to know you got home safely.Luck,JimAnderson

Are they the right track pads for a 420 loader? gregjo1948

Normally loaders would have street pads, but you will see them with grouser pads for certain applications. I did make up a set of tracks for a guy with worn grousers instead of street pads, but he was working sidehill in soft conditions all the time.

I assume this may have been a farm crawler and bucket added later. And yes, I will reverse the tracks. Thanks - Jim
