Jd 440 ic serial # tag missing help ?

Post by JayinPA » Sun Jan 26, 2014 9:45 pm

The tag is missing, Would the serial # be stamped anywhere else? It is a 440ic center throttle, 5spd. I guess that would make it a late model ?

I have the same problem Jayin. All you can do is guess and get close. You are correct, the center throttle would make it a 60 model unless somebody has changed it.
There are other parts that you could look at like, final drives, oil filter bracket, etc. that would help you narrow down the serial number range.

Hi,

You need the parts manual. That shows all the running change part number, and at what serial number each changed. By comparing several items in your machine to what is in the book, you can pretty danged close. :)

Of course, you need a service manual as well. That tells you how to do things. The parts manual tells you what you have.

Hopefully, yours is not like my 420c phase 3, where you need four service manuals to cover one machine. I have to have manuals for the M, 40, 420 and 430 to cover everything. Perhaps the 440 manual, being for the industrial line, has everything. I don't know, not having the 440 manual on hand.

With the Ag stuff, Papa Deere figured a service shop would have the previous manuals on hand, so did not re-cover things that did not change as the models progressed. Such as M to 40 to 420. I also need the 430 manual since the 420-3 is right on the model number change. My direction reverser is not covered in the 420 service manual. On the other hand, my manuals cover all the variants of wheel tractors as well as crawlers.

My parts manual is a 1962 version, so it covers all the 2cyl M thru 440 and all variants.

Jay-

FYI the parts manual is available free online at this link:

http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com. ... ervlet_Alt

You'll have to search for "440" in the model search field (upper left corner) and it will come up as a free PDF download (573- 440IC Industrial Crawler Tractor).

Thanks for the replies, that helps. I have ordered a service manual and will down load the parts manual.
