rebuilt carb float setting questions

Post by theshanmand1! » Sun Feb 09, 2014 4:51 pm

hello gentlemen.

I finally have my 58 420 running again, yeah! :)

she runs good with awesome oil pressure, however it doesn't run like it did when I bought it.

actually I can't believe it even ran, as dirty as the carb was, with collapsed floats etc.

as you might recall , I had some questions on how to set the float level, you guy's gave me some great advice ,and I proceeded.

when I purchased her, at an idle, she would, chug chug, pop.

now she goes, chug chug pause pause chug chug. no pop.

could that be a sign that I maybe set the float to lean? like she might be starving for fuel a bit?

all ignition parts are new, point's set @ 22 deg.

both carb, screw setting's are set to factory manual setting's

as always, your wisdom filled advice and help is greatly appreciated.

Try adjusting the idle screw some and see if there is any difference.
Often the main nozzle if it hasn't been removed can be plugged up causing these symptoms. Also valves that have sat over time tend to rust and lower compression.
Give her a dose of Sea Foam in the fuel and let it clear things up!
Works very well for such opportunities.

I think, if your float is too lean, you would notice it more while working the engine. You would be burning more fuel and running the bowl low quicker. The Duke is probably right about the valves and a compression test might be in order. gregjo1948

Carb float setting

Post by theshanmand1! » Mon Feb 10, 2014 2:12 pm

Thank you for the advice ,
When i rebuilt the carb. I pulled the idle screw, & the load screw, thouroghly cleaned them & thier gally's. re-set them as per the manual. Replaced the throttle shaft, viton Needle & seat, & new floats. All ignition parts, & wiring are new. I think i will play with the idle screw a bit, sea foam & comp. ck. also.
Thanks guy's.

No problem!
Main jet center of bottom bowl is usually plugged somewhat.
May take some penetrating oil to free it up.
May be worth opening up and removing it and cleaning it as well.
Then factory settings should be right on.
