I was cleaning the cylinder head from the 440I today and when I moved it around I kept hearing something rattling around. After searching around I found these two items in the water jacket. They are cast iron & the larger one is about 4" long. No idea what they are, leftovers from manufacturing???

are they cast zinc? for corrosion/acidic nuetralization...???

Well, the casting of cylinder heads is a pretty intricate business, so it's possible that metal got left behind.

The water passages and other tunnels are hollowed out by pieces of sand called cores that are placed in the sand mold. Sometimes these cores themselves are hollow, depending on the procedure to make them. If there were a leak, metal could enter the empty space inside such a core where it wasn't meant to go, and form mystery parts.

It would not be the first time I have seen tools, or what is left of them, inside places they ought not to be.

I once had to use a set of sporing bars for about four hours. The next day my hands were so sore I couldnt hardly pick anything up and my back didnt straighten out for three days. Cursed Egyptian tools they are....
