gas caps

Post by notmeu » Thu Feb 20, 2014 7:43 pm

Hello all, I hope everyone is enjoying pushing snow around in these hopefully last couple of weeks of heavy snow precipitation! The weather around here seems to be getting a little warmer. While pushing snow around on my 1956, 420 I always seemed to notice a little bit of gas seeping out of the cap, even with a half of a full tank. I did replaced the original cap with a new vented cap a couple of years ago because the old cap was leaking, but the new cap is also leaking since new. I was wondering if this was somewhat normal for the older style of gas caps? Or did I just get a cheap or bad cap? There is a gasket installed under the cap, and that is in great shape also the 2 ears are not bent. This might seem to be a odd question but does gas seem to leak out around the cap on your 2 cylinder crawler?

No leaks on my 440IC.
My 420T has a tube that goes down quite a ways into the tank.
No spill here either.
My 730 Diesel has damage on the tank fill..
Weeps fuel when 3/4 or more full.
The tall cap is for the 420/430 machines.

gas cap

Post by 1954cooter » Fri Feb 21, 2014 6:50 pm

Since theres a thread going on gas caps, I thought I might add this.I, too, had to get my 420 out and push back some of the snow banks I made from earlier storms.I checked my gas after a few hours working and was surprised to find pressure in the gas tank.I'm presuming this is made from heat of the engine and a vented gas cap that's not venting or is the cap supposed to hold a little pressure?

So I went from a short gas cap to the tall style and it still leaks! I guess it's time to build a better gas cap......
