4th gear

Post by Bret4207 » Wed Mar 05, 2014 8:32 am

Does anyone actually use 4th gear on a 40C? I tried the other day and I think the crawler was gonna shake apart. That was in snow too. Anyone know what 4th was supposed to be used for? Maybe pulling a rake or something?

I run in high when pushing snow, otherwise, it was probably only a transport gear. Keep in mine, these crawlers started life as farm crawlers, so they had to be driven to the field.

Hi,

I use 4th on the 420c to transport, but then it has a 5-speed gearbox. I think that 4th in a 4-speed is pretty much the same as 5th on a 5-speed (without heading into the shop and looking up the ratios in the book, that is).

I know what you mean by shaking! Those gears were meant to transport when on tires. They, like so many other things on these crawlers, were not altered when Deere popped the tires off for tracks. :P

IIRC my JD350 high gear moved at about the same speed as 4th on the 420c. And, that is fast enough for me to transport. The job will still be there however long it takes the poor old girl to get to it in 4th. ;)

High gear is the same, 4th gear in a 5 speed is 3 3/4MPH.

Hi, I'm a first-time crawler owner with a 455g. The previous owner told me never to use 3rd & 4th because they wear out the U/C so much faster. Better to just use 2nd and be patient.

Anyone feel there's a lot of truth to that?

Hi,

Yeah, but it feels like 334 MPH! I have driven formula cars at nearly 200 that offered a smoother ride! :P

I wander around in 3rd at medium RPM or 4th at low RPM and tell everyone that is why they are called crawlers! ;)

Hi,

Reverse wears the u/c the fastest. It puts wear on every bushing in contact with the sprocket in R, as opposed to only the first couple in F. Load matters as well. Lighter is always less wear. Finally, speed comes into play.

Of course, a loader wears u/c a lot faster than a dozer. Even empty, a loader machine is a lot heavier than a dozer. Fill that bucket, and then back up? Wow!

I call 4th gear the laxative gear. No need for milk of magnesia with that gear....
Other terms I've used.
Paint mixer gear
White knuckle gear
Loose your hat or glasses gear
Gear you don't want to be in around your brand new car gear
Hit a rock or large stick and think you died gear
And finally, the holy sh** I'm going to fast, I don't have a battery cover, the little battery flip down piece goes in front of the clutch I'm headed right for the house and completely forget to pull back on both steering clutches gear.

High Gear

Post by JWB Contracting » Wed Mar 05, 2014 7:16 pm

I was warned from a very young age about putting any of our smaller deere crawlers in high gear, basically an emgergency situation only. Not only does is wear the undercarriage, possible for alot of other dammage including driveline, frame and cross memebers.

We use 3rd gear in our 350C's, 450C and 450G very regularily for transport and light cleanup.

On a green crawler, 3rd gear is fast enough for me anyways in any version.

The other thing to point out about high gears is if your undercarriage is already worn and you are running on uneven ground, it is much easier to throw a track than in lower gears.
