Reverser Only Works In Reverse

My JD 440 ICD Crawler. Adjusted the forward clutch, the lever tighten up but still no go. It acts more like it is not all the way clear of the reverse position and not traveling all the way into forward position. Questions would be: Must I break it down to fix? and will using Reverse - Reverse to go forward damage the unit? and Is it possible to put into forward and leave it until I have time to fix correctly

Using reverse and reversed is hard on the reverser and is specifically mentioned by Deere as a no no. If it won't shift to forward normally, likely no way to lock it in so to speak. Has the reverser been shifted without using the foot clutch? If it has, most likely the tabs are torn off of the forward clutch discs.

I have owned the 440 for 7 years and I would not shift without the clutch. However what happened before is an unknown. The reverser just quit did not feel as though the clutch was slipping. So now I must break it down to see whats what?

Then it may be something else. I had a 440 wheel tractor that would not shift all of a sudden, turned out one of the clutch packs had a broken part. I had to tear it down and replace the piece to fix it.

You need to adjust the rear clutch pack first before you adjust the front one; even if it has been working in the reverse position. I would recommend keeping the rear clutch a little loose at first and see if it will allow the front clutch pack to be adjusted correctly. Gil

Hi,

Never use a differential reverser in reverse with the trans in reverse. The load on the spyder gears is way too high under this condition. Even just moving the machine with no other load is too much load on them.
