My 420 would work like the dickens -- hot and cold. Then it would apparently randomly cut of -- it sounded as if either it was out of fuel.
Really odd because it would almost cut off and then it would fire and run ragged for a bit. Then it would run well for a long time.
Couldn't track it down. Then an aha moment hit so while it was doing its trick I just moved the switch to setting #2 and all of a sudden it was running fine and no more symptoms.
420 running problem
A problem I found on my 420c - similar
If man can break it man can fix it .. it just takes time and money.

Hi,
Yes. My 420c 'I' position (#1) is worn to the point it is intermittent. I installed a new toggle switch in the plate that covers the hole where the hour meter used to be. I ran new wires as well. Now the ILBD switch stays off unless I need lights.
Too many miles on the contacts in that first position.

Re: 420 run problem
Don't order an alternator, by a rebuild kit for a 10SI from JEGS #555-10140 for $39.99 instead. It is not hard to rebuild one of them.theshanmand1! wrote:hello men,
I removed the alternator this morn, took it in to napa and they tested it, it is toast! they also said it is not a single wire internal regulator alt. I almost don't want to hear what I have burned up running it this way without a regulator more learning the hard way! I am going to order a new one from Steiner, new plugs, a heavier duty key switch &
wire it again. also I will re-check my ballast resistor for ohms and my coil
for the correct range of ohms.
hmm.... what else? oh yes, load test my battery to see if its toast also.
how bout it boy's, think she might run? hope so...
thanks again for all of your helpful input, I am learning however so slowly.
I have rebuild several dozen of them for various people around here.
I also built a new mount for the one on my '56 420.

Re: 420 run problem
not all internal reg. alts. are one wire..... look at the pic in this post http://www.jdcrawlers.com/messageboard/ ... highlight= if the terminals 1 and 2 are flat/inline then it is a internal reg like the pic BUT unless some one has changed the reg. to a one wire setup is has to have 3 wires sounds like you have a bad diode which can drain the batt down to zerotheshanmand1! wrote:hello men,
