Starter

Post by lakers » Sat Mar 29, 2014 10:19 am

I recently had a starter rebuilt, and re installed. SInce than I'm unable to get the dozer to restart. I went from a new CCA 520 battery to a new CCA850 battery. New battery cables x 2. Every time I try to start it gets so hot that it burns the covering off the battery cables. I've cleaned the post, the connectors, ground down to metal. Last but not least ran the ground direct to the starter. It'll try to crank than after about the third pull it gets extremely hot. I have pulled the plugs and again nothing! I'm at last resort had the starter completely rebuilt again thing that the armature maybe was defective. If this doesn't work what's the problem???

Thanks
Lyndon

Which crawler might help a little, but if the starter was truly "rebuilt", there would be no defective parts in it, all should have been replaced or checked. Assuming it is not a high drag in the engine, or something like that, I would bet on a bad rebuild.

Sorry - It's a 440 IC. I was told the same thing from a heavy equipment mechanic that has been to the farm last 3 w/e's to help with this. I just picked up the new rebuilt starter again today with new armature all welds test is good. Unable to do a load test.

Thanks for the feedback Lavoy. That is the same thing the mechanic said. That being said if it doesn't start tomorrow when I reconnect what other things should I look into?
Thanks.

Not sure if you have checked this , but I make sure the engine turns freely. May not even be a starter issue could be something as simple as the hyd pump pressuring up and not letting the starter rotate the engine. I haven't had too many defective starters. Just an idea

Why did you have the starter rebuilt? Maybe the starter wasn't in need of repair and there is some serious drag while trying to crank the engine. gregjo1948

I am recalling a machine I worked on some years ago. I think it was the starter bolts that one was too long and dragged on the flywheel. Just a thought, pull the starter and spark plugs and turn the engine by hand.

Unfortunately due to 60mph winds and snow from this last fron t I was unable to get the newly rebuilt starter connected. I had the starter rebuilt d/t an individual was operating other than myself and continued to try and start and after seeing the starter smoking and not able to start. I removed the starter and was able to see where it had burnt up. We have tried pulling by hand and it turns freely.

Make sure the starter is properly rebuilt this time, or you could have issues again, especially if it got that hot.

It does sound slightly like a messed up armature on the starter.

I'm curious as to why you're cranking it so long that the starter is smoking and/or it's burning the insulation off the cables. If the starter is pulling that much current you should be able to clearly hear that something is wrong immediately upon engaging the starter, so why would you continue to crank?

40C starter

Had my starter rebuilt after i also ran it too much and the battery posts got hot. I carefully cleaned the posts and put a little goop around the base so the battery acid would not leak out. Anyway the armature was shorted and i was happy to get a new one for 50 bucks. With new brushes, bushings and starter switch it now spins great (and i make sure i have plenty of gasoline- the source of non starting!) This is a high draw starter and the manual says to operate not more than 30 seconds at a time and then wait two minutes before trying again. It even started mine while engaged in reverse gear (don't allow me around your equip.!) So make sure the armature is not shorted.
