440 large vs small tranny

Post by wizner85 » Sat Jul 19, 2014 5:52 pm

Well, just found out if you put a large style tranny as a replacement for the small style, you will be an inch off on attaching the bell housing and engine to the c channel. Took me two hours of measuring to find the small tranny is literally 1 inch shorter length casting than the larger style. So now the engine sticks past the mounting holes on the c frame by an inch. Holy xhxhxhsjdjxhshsjdhdjs john deere you couldn't make the jfhdjdjfhdkkxjxjdhdjxjsjxjdj casting the same length???

Not sure if anyone knew this or not, but if you are piecing a 440 together from pieces like me, then now you know.
Only easy solution I see is drilling new holes to mount engine and bell housing, since I am 65 percent back together now.....
Hoping hood fits correctly now, and rad clears front casting..

From what I'm told large tranny has a 4 bolt plate over the ring gear. So if both have this plate I think you are fine. Not sure when small tranny was stopped. I'll let everyone know how much fab work is involved with this... Worst case I think the hood needs chopped by an inch......

A power increase at serial # 448001 changed the drivetrain.
The diesel was added then as well.
The trans is 1" longer in my later 440IC with a 4 speed than in the early 440IC with a 5 speed.
Just what I could check and measure.

All diesel and gas after 448,001 use the large tranny. At this time, the reverser case changed to larger studs, and the side frames to accommodate the longer transmission. There are likely other changes at the same time.
