1010 crawler
1010 crawler
Just bought an old 1010 crawler that needs some attention. Intending on using it to clean up in our woods and other small jobs around. Looks like it is either a '61 0r '62 - serial number begins with a 2 but not sure on rest without getting another look and has gas engine. I was told machine has been parked for several years because of steering issues(doesn't turn right).
Was thinking it was going to need clutches. Got machine running and seems to run fine. Had a slight knock or rattle from main clutch area - thinking release bearing since it pretty much went away with clutch pushed. After reading here - thought I would try a few things( haven't removed inspection covers for adjustment etc.). right lever has very little resistance compared to left - 3-4 inches free play. Took it out - tracks straight going forward. Put it against tree and both tracks spin. Thinking might just be adjustment or linkage issues? (this is my first crawler). While testing it out I go to back up - after putting it in reverse and releasing clutch nothing but nasty grinding noise and machine won't move- thinking main clutch or release bearing issues. Wondering on thoughts as to any checks before pulling motor. Could see it having clutch issues with bearing/disc if it did sit as long as I was told it had. Wondering if there are any common main clutch issues or checks to do first with these machines before dismantling and if clutch parts are readily available. Thanks for any input.

If it pushes forward with no noise, it will back up with no noise, no difference as far as engine clutch is concerned, so I don't believe that is the issue. More likely a transmission issue if the noise is that bad.

Sorry. Before I checked to see if tracks would spin it would go through all gears and reverse no problem. After - it doesn't go forward or reverse and if idling in neutral noise is there but not very severe. After clutch is pressed, machine put in any gear and clutch is released there is the nasty noise and no power to either track. Was kind of thinking there was something in clutch under load?
i doubt that the no steering to the right is an adjustment.... i would say that the right clutch pack is so swollen from water/rust that the fingers are way down that's why you have all that free play in the right lever

Yes, those parts are readily available from Deere and aftermarket sources. You do need to be careful who you buy discs from as there are some junk ones out there.MarteV wrote:For the most part - are steering and main clutch parts available?

FYI the board's admin (Lavoy) sells the correct kind if you need them.

YES parts are available .....yes and no on the brake depends on what condition the brake band is in and there may have been someone in there trying to "adjust" it hoping it would work... your going to have to pull it and see just what you have on both clutches on the main clutch you may have ripped the center out of the disc but who knows

The main issue for parts availability on 1010s and early S/N 2010s is the undercarriage- many of the track parts (track links, front idlers, possibly sprockets) are no longer available new. Pins and bushings for your existing track links are available sporadically. Hopefully your undercarriage set is decent.
