Hi, I'm going to look at a 440 reverser that has been taken out of a machine that hasn't been run for at least 6 years. I've been told that there is oil in it and I plan to open the plugs and look around. Is there anything that I can do to get a sense of the condition that it's in? Also, my crawler is an earlier model 440ic, are all reversers the same so that they fit on all of the 440ic's?
Thanks, Roger

Hi,
There are two transmissions for the 440. The small and the large. The reversers are different as well as a bunch of other things.
The serial number break for the large from the small is 448001, in 1960.
The full serial number range is 440001 to 461929. So, 8000 were small and 13928 were large. So it is a 60/40 split.
I do not have a parts book handy, but I think you need the casting part numbers for the large and small reverser cases so you can tell what he has vs. what you need.

Only difference on early or late reverser is the main case itself, all internals are the same. About all you can tell from the outside is maybe see the tabs on the clutch discs to see how damaged they are. If they are real beat and bent, the reverser has been shifted without the engine clutch and you will need clutch discs.

Thanks Lavoy, the shaft rotates and the shifter rail slides freely.
I picked it up yesterday and it seems to be in pretty good shape except that the exposed part of the front clutch assembly is pretty rusty on the third of it that must have been sitting out of the oil. But everything seems to move.
Since this has the large housing and my 440 has the "empty" small housing I'll need to transfer the guts into my housing. Is there a service manual the goes into more detail on the reverser than the SM2023?

I put a large reverser housing on a small tranny. Fit just fine. Bolt holes are just a little bigger on the reverser, so I put a flat washer on the cap screws.
Ripping apart a reverser isn't fun. Front end is easy. The back end requires a 2-13/16 socket (if I remember correctly) and a hydraulic press to remove the rear assembly
DO NOT USE A PUNCH TO REMOVE THE REAR ASSEMBLY!!!!!! you will break things.
I'd tear down as much as possible and replace all bearings, and clutch discs that look damaged.
It's no fun ripping the entire tractor back apart for one small thing.
