420c
Hi, I have 1958 john deere 420c and I'm having a problem that I can not figure out. It starts good, moves but when I'm pushing dirt it has no power, even on 1st gear. I check all fuel lines, tank and filters so gas is not a problem
Anybody out there with ideas
Thx
Pat

Definitely main jet issue. Had that happen. Ran good, then died when doing work. Took carb apart and bingo, giant piece of gunk in the main jet.
It's a fuel issue.

Tried cleaning the main jet but everything was strip so I ordered a rebuilt carb from McDonald carb & ignition model tsx530. Just install it but did not fix my problem, still no power when pushing dirt. Starts well, good respond with the throttle but just no power. Anybody got suggestions
First of all, those carbs have to be properly adjusted to have power under load- there is a separate "load" (power) adjustment screw. Did you adjust all (on my 8N's M-S carb there is three) air screws on the carb in the required sequence?
If that is OK, did you check the timing as someone had already suggested? I would pay special attention the distributor mechanical advance as they can rust up.
If those all check out have you checked engine compression? Also are you sure engine clutch isn't slipping when under load?

if I remember right, the adjustment procedure is the idle speed screw first, then idle mixture screw, and then the power load screw. You have to do them in that order or you won't get good results and the governor will "hunt" and you will lose power. The idle speed needs to be checked with the tach to a specific RPM for your engine. The book adjustments for the other screws will get you close but you really need to fine tune to get it right for your machine.
Also the power screw is supposed to be adjusted under load (like pulling a plow or drawn implement), not just under full throttle which also makes a big difference in power, at least on my 8N wheel tractor.
