C60
Have a C60 Chevy we are putting back on the road. A 1977. Has hydravac brakes with a single master cylinder. for safety would like to convert it to a dual cylinder. Anybody have any advice on that. Also need to find a new wiring harness.

A single master in a 77 doesnt sound right, my 67 has a double but its not a dyravac either.. I would check on a website i find very helpful. Its http://67-72chevytrucks.com/ its as good to chevy trucks as Lavoys site here is. Even though its main following is for 67-72 there is also a section for 73-78 too and the people are very helpful.. good luck and be prepared to post pics too they always like to see... good luck

I may be all wet, but unless it came from the factory that way, I would not mess with it. How would you determine which cylinder to use, what proportioning valve, etc. We have had a 74 since it was born, and no problems, and if memory serves, it is a single as well.

Okay, you guys convinced me not to mess with it. I will just make sure I do a thorough rebuild on the brake system. I was remembering a incident years ago with a International with the same system that failed. It made for a very thrilling ride that traumatized me ALMOST as much as my first marriage.

In all honesty if the brakes failing are that much of a concern to you I would look for an air brake equipped truck. I worked for as a mechanic for a guy yrs ago that ran a fleet of chevy c65 tandem gravel truck with gas engine some were air brake some hydraulic in 9 yrs we never had a single incident of total brake failure on the hydraulic equipped trucks. The hydrovac boosters would fail and they were pricey but you still had brakes. Biggest headache was the parking brakes they needed constant adjustment.

I do have a larger truck with air. I used the C60 for about 5 years till I upgraded. Then the C60 was used for a off road dump for several years. I am going to make it road worthy again so I have a backup and for smaller loads. Had just thought since I will have it torn down almost to the frame it would be a good time to upgrade some things. But, I guess changing the brake system is not worth the trouble.
I am assuming you have front drum brakes- have you looked into a front disc brake conversion?

Disc brake would require some sort of approved conversion if the truck has to pass safety. Don't know about in the USA but I do transport truck inspections here and the rules are quite strict when modifying original equipment. Up here would require swapping the front axle and rear if you want 4 wheel disc and replacing the entire braking system with the one from the vehicle the axles were removed from. Lot of work to do.
