Looking at 450C Loader

Hi all. I hope someone can help me out here on two unknown steel plates I noticed on a 450C loader that I was looking at today. The plate is on both sides of the machine below the battery box and below the hyd control valve compartment. Appears to bolt to loader frame and rear housing. Anyone know why these steel plates are supposed to be there???

what is on the rear of the machine? the hoe/ripper bracket comes up and hooks to the loader frame at that point ... a pin goes in that half round and in the upper bracket to locate/lock in place what ever those plates are on yours is i dont know what is on the other end of the plates?? pics???

The particular machine has nothing on the back. There is a hitch, counterweight and PTO. That makes sense though say for a backhoe to tie into the loader mount but I would assume the steel to be thicker for a backhoe.

The rear bracket is probably what it is minus the fact that it was probably torched at one point because the j-brackets are not there.

those steel plates are NOT JD.... looks like something home made was mounted on the back at some time

Just west of here in the 70s and 80s, there used to be dozens of mostly 550s used for skidding. The dealer would not let them out of the yard without a similar set up. That is, taking the top rails off of a hoe mounting bracket and welding them to the ROPS bracket in order to stiffen up the tractor and counteract some of the stress created by a log arch.

I was looking at a 350C 6 way dozer that had a similar treatment except the straps were welded on instead of bolted and weld was cracked on one side. This machine was equipped with winch and skidding arch. Is there any sign of cracking or weld repair where the side frames bolt onto the steering clutch housings? May have been an effort to take some play out of loader frame due to pin wear at loader mounting points.

My 450C has similar JD plates mounted like that. Mine has/had a ripper on the back. The 2nd picture is exactly what is on the rear of mine. The previous owners of of mine torched off the ripper section and welded in a 4 x 4 box frame of sorts with a mobile/prefab ball welded to it. They used the machine to clear the lad and then move the home into position. My guess is that the keys, #2 were used to help lock in the rear bracket with the loader frame. I've not seen a loader with a hoe attachment which is what may be the purpose of the bracket assy.

As jrichards added, that frame that is added is not JD. I can get a picture of mine if it would help in any way.

I put a winch and arch on a 450E and made up my own bracket and strap arrangement. But the bolts worked themselves loose on one side and just as you say, there is now a crack in the side rail weld where it bolts to the steering clutch housing. The other side stayed tight and has no crack.

DrLoch - A photo of the brackets on yours would be great. I am picturing the JD brackets being a lot thicker.

I will check the frame rails for welds/cracks. If I find that both or one frame rail is cracked, are they repairable?

My 450 has a backhoe mounted on it and those holes and a steel pin in that groove between the bolts is for the front of the backhoe mounting brackets. My brackets are separate, as in a right and left bracket, and are not attached to each other. Each bracket in addition to those 2 front holes has 9 more holes in the back of the steering clutch housings. Hope this helps.
