lFinally got that 420
I wrote about a 420 I was going to buy back in December "barring unforeseen circumstances". Well, as usual one of those unforeseen circumstances did crop up and it was last week before I could seal the deal. I got her home yesterday and have found the serial number/ID plate seems to be missing. Is there any other place I can find the ser#?

I never know you could do that. I'll be stopping by the local JDeere dealership soon!Pat wrote:If engine has not been replaced, there is a number on the engine below the generator mount. Get up with the John Deere regional rep with that number, fill out the paperwork, and in 9 months or so you may have a replacement serial tag although it will be larger than original and with a bar code.
1956 JD420, gearmatic 8a winch, custom 6 way blade and FOPS.
So, what exactly have I got here? The sheet metal, not pictured and beat to crap, says 420 on what appears to have been a green tractor but then there's yellow too and more green over that. Can;t tell if it had the stripe of not since there's at least 4-5 shades of paint, including RED, on the hood.

Hi,
Looks like a Phase-II Ag 420c with a 62 blade and someone replaced the original engine with one from an Industrial machine.
Careful with that gear-style reverser. I don't think any parts are available for those any longer.

Thanks Stan. That's what I more or less figured. On the reverser, if it's that delicate, would I be better off just leaving it in forward or reverse and using the tranny? The little I have used it gives the impression it's working OK, but I don't know what it should feel like. Is there something I should be looking for as far as making it last?

Hi,
On a dozer, it is not so bad. Dozer loads are forward. No backing up with a bucket load.
Just come to a complete stop and apply the master brake along with the master (engine) clutch before moving the reverser lever. You may have to fiddle the clutch pedal some to get it to go in.
This is where the later differential-style reverser is an improvement. No clutch fiddling. But one still has to use the master clutch and brake. Neither style is a power shift. This is how they usually get hurt, BTW. Someone power shifting older style reversers.
Of course, if you opt to leave the reverser in forward and use the trans reverse, you have to fiddle the clutch sometimes. to get the gears meshed as well.
Also of course, never use both the reverser in reverse and the trans in reverse to gain another forward speed. On either kind of reverser.

Thanks Stan, good info. I have an op, service and parts manual enroute. I am looking forward to running her down into the wood lot today. Without the sheet metal and grill guard on I'm not going boondocking, just grab a couple of sticks and snake them back. I think I may take my much better sheet metal off the 40 and certainly the grill guard. I have a ho'made spare grill guard, but it's uglier than sin. I'm going to clean up some wiring and whatnot before I get too worried about sheet metal.

Hi,
Sounds like a plan. IIRC, the 40 guard and the 420 were the same. The only difference in the tin is the nosecone and that is different between wheel tractors and crawlers, not between the 40 and the 420.

Do I understand correctly that mine has the long slot? Or was that just for info?
One other question- I have seen pics of what are supposed to be 62 blades that tilt. Was that an option or something? This one doesn't have the arced adjuster I saw on the tilting ones. Is there any place that has pics of the different blades?

Hi,
Sure looks like a long slot in the pics. I also have no recollection of a 62 blade without tilt, but it may have been an option. Or, only on the early 62 production. I will look at my 62 blade manual later and see if it sheds any light on this. Don't hold your breath, though. It is a pretty thin manual...
FYI, loaders and blades are attachments, and so do not show up in the machine service or parts manuals.
Also, there are things which are common on the 420 and the 40 as well as some which go all the way back to the M series. The 420 service manual will not cover that which is the same as that in the older manuals.
So, to cover everything, you need three service manuals. The reason is the manuals were written to save space in the long binder racks in service shops. It was understood that a shop would already have manuals for the predecessor equipment.
Don't feel too badly about that, though. My 420c is a Phase-III and so I also need the 430 manual as well for a few items, the largest and most important of which is the differential direction reverser.
And, this was not limited to back then, either. In 2008 I bought a brand new 5103 wheel tractor. Turns out to be Deja Vu. A one-year update. Another Phase-III. So, I got a 5103 manual, and it doesn't quite line up with what I have. I found I have a Phase-I manual. But, there is a Phase-II manual. Ah ha! No. Guess again. And, there is no Phase-III manual. I had to get a 5045D manual to cover those Phase-III bits. But, other things on the 5103 are different than the 5045D. End result is I need three manuals. Some things never change.....

I have all the 40 books too Stan, 2 sets I think! As far as the blade I just looked and it's just a straight blade that manually angles, no tilt at all. So what kind of blade is it? Nothing appears to be missing.
I never did get to take it out for a spin yesterday. Maybe tomorrow.
So if it's the long slot it's a 58? Assuming that's original of course...
