I don't mind my 2-53 to much. It starts right up when it's warm and only needs a small shot of either when it's cold.
It does have a decent amount of oil blow by from something which is quite annoying but for the 3 hours a year of runtime I put on it I can deal with it.
Lavoy your prices sound pretty steep. I think someone on here had a blower rebuilt for $500. Gasket kit is around $200 I think. I paid $130 each for injectors right from Detroit if I remember correctly. I never priced pistons or liners.
Look on agkits.com they have complete rebuild kits for a decent price.

The catch with Detroit rebuild kits is all the stuff they leave out. No seals, bushings, etc. By the time you add in all the parts for a complete rebuild, it gets pricey. Keep in mind I am not doing an inframe or bandaid job, this is a complete machine shop rebuild.
The last blower I had done at Detroit was $850 almost 10 years ago. The quotes now are all past that. Some of the price is machining the end plates to accept the news seals.
