I just purchased this dozer and cannot figure out the winch. I can get it to reel in and that's about it. Is there a certain way to make it reel out or is it just a free spool type? Is there any operating manuals online to look at for this type of dozer? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

This kinda, sorta should be in the Late Model Forum, maybe Lavoy can move it. Any model numbers on the winch?

Hi,
Manuals are based on the sub-model (straight, B, C and D). You figure that out based on the machine serial number, then follow the link for a list of which manuals go with what:
http://www.jdcrawlers.com/messageboard/ ... hp?t=10109
The 350 series starts nine models down the list. There are no winches listed at this point, though. Most of the time, winches are not Deere items.
There aren't many manuals for anything online since Deere owns the copyrights, and they still sell them.

To figure out what you actually have based on the serial number:

There should be manuals to purchase at Deere, but nothing to look at for free. Look for serial number plate, that should have model number.

Thanks for all the great info. I got to play around with the winch today and here is what it does. RPM's around 1600 and you have to play with (wiggle back and forth an inch or so) and eventually it goes to free spool and you can pull the cable out. Reels in good but does not hold well while moving forward. Will check for leaks and try baking it when I get it apart. I did replace the cable that operates the winch when I got it. This is a JD winch. I will try to get a model off it soon. Another problem it has is that is hard to steer after running a while. Works good for awhile then just gets weak. Is there a certain way to adjust the brakes? Thanks

I bet you paid a bundle for that control cable if you got it from Deere! $300 for mine. Your winch should spool out if you push the lever down which moves the hydraulic control lever to the left as I recall. Mine doesn't hold well when moving either. An experienced logger friend told me sometimes the internal brake bands get coated from sitting around and tend to slip. If it doesn't start holding after using awhile, then the brake band may need to be replaced. I'm not sure if there is a way to adjust them. Real pain in the butt to replace that cable. Spacing is really tight down there.

Hi,
Well, steering adjustments require the service manual. You need to get multiple items set right, to operate in the proper sequence. That mainly being to fully release the clutch discs before applying the brake band.

Hi,
You need the manual to properly adjust the steering. You really need the photos that go with each step as well as the directions.

Interesting thread!
The steering on my dozer is fine, but it does steer better one way then the other. An old duffer by me (87 years old) loves dozers nd claims he can adjust the clutches well enough and has offered to help, but I was not so sure and have not let him do so yet.
I am not sure how much he knows about the 350D. He has got a JD 440 and a JD 1010. Do you think he is up to it...or at least able to work with me to get it adjusted better? I heard well adjusted clutches was better than sliced bread, you just don't know how great they are until they are properly adjusted.

I have no intention of traveling to my grave in a well manicured body; instead I am going to slide into heaven with a big power turn, totally wore out with busted knuckles, jump off my dozer loudly yelling, Woo Hoo, another Shepard has just arrived!
As far as I know, there is no adjustment on a C or D model.

Hi,
I am confused now. The thread title says 350B. But now I see reference to 350D. Very different in the steering department.
FWIW, the B is a lot like the older crawlers. Some details change, but the same operating theory applies.
