JD350D 3-pt hitch
Hi,
Mr I-had-straight-350-but-now-wanna-jump-to-a-D here. Again.
The original 350 had a 3-pt hitch option. Later units had a scarifier unit as well.
Question is, if I found (yeah, right) a 3-pt unit would that actually fit a D? Or, did redesign change things such that it won't?
Still, probably better with the scarifier as that would be Job One for a 3 pt.
I presume the D could mount the scarifier since I have seen them on C units.
Some might call it a Ripper, but it is way too light for me to call it that. I want to use it on my overly long driveway. Which, has other people using it by county easement, so I have to work it up at least three times a year.

My technical manual says optional equipment for a 350D is a 3 point hitch, ripper, belt driven pulley, winch and backhoe...
I have no intention of traveling to my grave in a well manicured body; instead I am going to slide into heaven with a big power turn, totally wore out with busted knuckles, jump off my dozer loudly yelling, Woo Hoo, another Shepard has just arrived!

A 3100 ripper (scarifier ) would be easier to locate whether it is already mounted on a machine or loose. Mind you, not all dozers can mount a ripper. The dozers attachment mounts are part of the blade lift frames, there are frames that have the mounting pads and ones that do not, each has it's own part number. Every loader I have seen seems to be able to mount a ripper, not to say there are ones that can't, but it's not explicitly called out in the manuals like the dozers are.
A factory 3pt is about as hard as hens teeth to find. I've seen them on C models, and like Ce said, the D's literature mentions it. I believe the rockshaft bolts across the steering clutch housings, which are the same C to D, It uses a double acting cylinder controlled from the auxiliary function of a 3 or 4 spool control valve (3 on loader, 4 for a 6-way dozer).

Hi,
Thanks. I will have to dig up a 350 C/D manual and look at the mountings. Mostly so I can tell what any given machine I go look at has. A ripper would be fine (vs a 3-pt) for what I need to do.
Actually, a road grader would be better, but then that is all it would be good for.

I hear you Stan. I would sell my first born child for a road grader at this point as it would be nice to level my fields I am converting from forest, BUT that is all it would do.

Hi,
There used to be pull-behind graders, but the last I saw any for sale new had to be 10 years ago. Had a nice blade mounted on a arch with rear wheels and hooked to the drawbar of a tractor.
Now, one of those would do nicely. No scarifier, though. Not heavy enough to make one work.

Hi,
Well, ya gotta buy another whole machine, take the bits off ya want, pile the rest out back....
But, then, maybe the second machine ain't so bad. So, it bugs you, just sitting there. So, you decide to rebuild it. But, then you need some other bits to do that....
So, you buy a third machine for those bits....
But, then, someone comes to you looking for bits and help with their machine...
But, then....You realize just how Lavoy got started....
We are all actually crawling down the same road....Lavoy is just in the lead....

Hi,
Just for giggles, I googled....
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cat-Case-JD-Joh ... Sw-KFXdq2h
Most of one, anyway....
Feel free to scarf up the scarifier. I haven't found my base machine yet. Or, should I say, my *first* base machine.
Stan
Edit. First. Base. First Base! There has to be a joke in there somewhere....

Stan, look in the "Birmingham ALabama cragislist". Under Farm and garden search for "Chisel PLow". Look at the only ad that comes up, "farm equipment for sale". That guy has a tow behind box blade for $800. Not sure if its exactly what your looking for but its a start. Your only half a long day away from picking it up!
There was a scarifer set from a 350 including teeth on there a while back for $1200 but it has since been sold or removed. it was complete includig bracketry.

Stan: Wonder if something like this would work for you? I've seen them advertised for sale used.

Hi,
Now there is a cool looking thing. I don't know that it would work. The issue I have now with a 3pt scarifier as part of a box blade is....no down pressure on the hitch. It just bounces around.
So, I need a crawler with a 3pt. Thought about adding one to the 420. But, I really want to retire the 420 and go to a much newer 350.

Over the years I've add weight to things like this by building an appropriate plywood box, attaching some chain or cable for slings or lifting points, then pouring in the concrete, usually multiples of 80 lb. sacks, sometimes incorporating some steel or lead as needed. Once cured, the blocks can be lifted off with a hoist or forks using these slings, or left on. By building the boxes specific to the implement, they can be designed to stay in place using only gravity. Just my two cents
