JD 1010 driveline issues
I was using my 1010 to spread some gravel on a steep part of a driveway. I pushed clutch in and let it free wheel back down slope. Afterward there's no forward or backward motion. No noise, acts like it's in neutral. I've looked at the repair manual and don't see where I would need to check first. If it was a clutch issue there would be noise, broken shaft there should some kind of noise. Does anyone have a suggestion as to where to start looking. If there's any better drawings than what's in repair manual please share. It doesn't have a reverser on it .

Where is the reverser located ?
IF you do NOT have a reverser then there is a coupler on the rear of the main shaft between the engine and the transmission (where the reverser would be) Others have had that coupler wear out and strip all the splines out and NO GO after that (page 74 item#2 in the parts book)
2010 with 622 dozer with mod. 35 ripper and a 2010 with 622 dozer bought in 1969 and a 2010 loader with drott and mod. 36 ripper

The reason I say I don't have a reverser, I only use transmission shifter to to go backwards. No other lever to choose
How do I get to the area to check coupler on drive shaft ? Is there enough room for the coupling to slide off splines ? The parts drawing looks to have been OVER copied, can't tell much what holds it in place. I was on a pretty steep incline when I let it free wheel backwards (so stupid move). I didn't let out on clutch to stop it anyway !
Thanks for all the info

While idling, try to shift the trans with the clutch out. If no grinding noise, it has to be clutch or prop shaft coupling. Either one requires pulling the engine, coupler would be center section as well.

Thanks Lavoy. So what I'm thinking the only way to see the internals is to remove the engine ? ...weather's turned bad here in Wv. Next opportunity I'll check that out.

Is there any inspection plates/covers that can be removed to see clutch linkage ? I'd hate to pull engine and find something else wrong
Not what you mean. If it was a linkage issue, you would feel it in the pedal. If you want, pull the trans top cover and you can see if the input shaft is turning. If it isn't, still nothing that can be fixed from the outside. Plus, linkage issue would mean you can disengage the clutch, not the problem you are experiencing.

Thanks Lavoy. I believe I'm going to do some more troubleshooting and inspecting before starting to remove motor. Everything worked well on machine until I let it freewheel backing off incline. Top of transmission should be easy to see into trans. It's like something backed off when I let it freewheel.
Broken clutch disc is one other thought.

I am thinking clutch plate stripped itself apart, coupler is another thing that just lets go when it wants.
Lavoy is right, no need to pull the trans cover, a quick check is to try and shift without depressing the clutch....no grinding means no gears turning in the trans and you lost power at the clutch or coupler.
