i have chance to get jd440 been rebuilt and has 120 hours on it since...
36 pads on each track uc sprockets all good...replaced from donor has 6 way hydr blade....and comes with extra engine, tranny and reverser and many other parts available..from donor.....5500.
my problem is wt...what is least weight trailer to haul this 7380lbs.
see some pics here where jd440 loaded behind what looks like 1/2 ton pu.
my 3/4t shows gvwr at 7580
if i can not haul it i cannot get it...cannot buy another truck too!!!!!

I too have a Hudson 10,000 GVW trailer like Stan. I pull it with no difficulty with a 1500 series (1/2 ton) Suburban, basically the same as a Silverado or F150. I have four wheel drive which I highly recommend if either the pickup or drop off location is not a parking lot or driveway. I do not have a weight distributing hitch but it would definitely be a good idea. Trailer brakes are a mandatory requirement. Set the brake controller to match the weight once the crawler is loaded. One other thing. Yes, I did mention it in passing before: A full floating rear axle on the truck. Otherwise, one may find oneself sitting alongside the road with a wheel and axle sticking out into space....

I am not familiar with the term of full floating axle. Is that with coil springs or regular leaf springs?
I really like the 440 and believe that i have a good one with the 6 way hydraulic.

Hi,
It is not the suspension which matters. It is the axle itself.
The term Float means it comes loose on its own and is not part of something else.
Full Floating means that the hub is retained with two sets of wheel bearings and the axle passes thru and is attached via its own flange to the hub.
So, the axle is not part of the hub. It Floats on both the hub and the driven end.
A Semi Floating axle only Floats on the driven end. The wheel hub is attached to the axle and so the hub rides on only one wheel bearing.
You have seen these. They have a big old piece which sticks out thru the center of the wheel. That is the end of the axle bolted to the hub to transfer power.
What happens all too often with Semi Floating axles is the tail wags the dog too much and the single wheel bearing fails. The entire wheel and brake comes sliding out and the inner end of the axle shaft slips out of the differential.
Then you are really stuck. That is not fixable alongside of the road. Plus, the Highway Patrol then gives you a fat ticket for Incorrect Equipment. They give families with travel trailers a break when this happens, but they never do when they see equipment being hauled.
Gad! Several Debug Mode errors. I keep using contractions, which have Single Quote marks in them! Sheesh! You would think I was past using those by now!

do i still need floating axle with a gooseneck?
I hauled for several years with a half ton, never had a problem. I did although always have a good trailer with heavy axles and brakes, and had LT tires on the pickup, not P-metrics. Unless you are hauling for a living you are never going to wear out a half ton axle, and if you do, an axle kit is $100/side on Ebay.

All I will say is that, every summer, I see at least a dozen half-ton trucks with trailers alongside the road with a tire hanging out on an axle. There is no way I would pull more than 5000 with one.
But, yes, a local one-time haul should not pose an issue. Use a heavy enough trailer with good electric brakes on all four wheels.

it is 3/4 ton and need to haul 550 miles 1 way and return... would like gooseneck of course with trailer elec trlr brakes..truck is setup with controller.
i need her down in tenessee smack in the middle
will gooseneck keep problems from the non floating axle?? course can not use load leveler hitch so must distribute weight more accurately. i can pay someone to haul it but that cost would go nicely to a gooseneck.
this thing comes with extra engine no distr poss no carb but tranny and reverser old rollers rock guards and maybe sprockets...n other

Hi,
I would think you would be ok with a gooseneck. They do not wag the back of the truck like a tagalong does. You get a lot of advantages with a gooseneck.

Yeah. My Bad. Used a couple of contractions yesterday and made several De Bug empty posts before I found and removed them all. So, now we have the No Posts on Page Two.
