1970 JD 450Clutch adjuster tool
I need help finding a JD 450 clutch adjuster tool!
b_ware,
Are you looking for the clutch finger setting gauge? My 450 service manual shows using one of two: JD-264 for constant mesh transmissions and JD-227 for the H-L-R transmissions. The 227 gauge is to be modified by cutting .156" step on the center gauge surface and measuring to there. Fingers all to be set within .010" of each other.
I too, need to make this adjustment before I install my engine in a H-L-R loader. My searching on the net came up with a distance of 2.012" from the legs of the gauge to the measuring point which contact the clutch fingers. If anyone can confirm or correct that distance, it would be appreciated.

You can cob one up using some shims, an appropriate length straight edge, and a machinists rule
I dont remember the measurement but more important is that they are all the same

Post and then edit also worked consistently as you suggested but doesnt seem necessary

1970 JD450 Clutch Adjuster Tool
Yes, the measurement is correct. I got 52.40 mm which is 2.06 inches.
Here are photos of the clutch finger setting gauge that I used to adjust the clutch in my H-L-R 450 loader. I used two small C-clamps to hold a straightedge across two small bench squares standing upright. It was quite simple to set up and adjust the straightedge to be horizontal. I used the depth adjusting feature of a dial caliper to measure the setting on each finger. A bit of simple math allowed me to calculate caliper readings to arrive at finger setting of 2.012" above the plane of the flywheel.
As mentioned in a previous post, a bit of research on various forums and google gave me the 2.012" figure. I am not positive of it, but it was very close to the previous setting on my clutch. After installing my engine in the crawler, the clutch pedal free-play is just about right so I have confidence in the adjustment. I have more work to do on the machine before firing it up but I will report out on the results.

Re: 1970 JD 450Clutch adjuster tool
Have you looked at the parts catalog (PC922 if it is a straight 450) for your machine? I don't see kits listed only the individual parts. It appears there are a couple different sealing options based on the machine's serial number, and possibly if the adjuster was ever replaced. For serial number 64134 and before, it looks like T23893 (sub to AT13014) is the outer dust seal. On the inner end of the piston is T23894 backup ring and T19094 O-ring. That sounds like the one you are describing. The seals were used on later serial numbers, according to the parts catalog. I expect Lavoy can help you with parts if you contact him.
