general info question
I know most of these old gals are booked at the old non detergent 30 wt oils...
and i know that the modern oils are much more efficient in doing job....
question is....after rebuilding....surely we should be able to use the newer oils...like 5w30 etc instead of straight 30 wt not sure whether 10w30 would be better...just what is the difference between 5w and 10w????
thanks

Hi,
I use 10w30. The difference is that 5 is thinner than 10.
The way the multigrade works is that it acts like whatever the lower number is in the cold, and like whatever the upper number is when hot.
Used to be we had to chase the oil from season to season. Use 30 in the summer, 20 in the spring and fall, 10 in the winter. Now we just use 10w30.
The W means Winter. The old range was from 10w to 50 and 10 thru 20 got the W.
Don't go below 10w even in the multigrades. 0w and 5w are for modern CNC made engines with really small clearances. These old girls ain't that!

Little colder up here, but I run 0W-30 Mobil 1 in most of mine.
