wallowed out hole fix

Post by panhead » Wed May 10, 2017 7:59 am

Last fall while using my 1010 I noticed the bolts holding the final drive to the dozer were coming out of the casting.
So, last winter, I pulled everything off of the side.
Found out that there were 7 broke off bolts holding the final drive on.
Drilled/heated/oiled all of them till I got-em out.
Cleaned out the holes with a tap. Loc-tited the bolts in.
I was using it the other day, and 2 of the bolts are coming loose again. Took about 8 hours to come loose, last winter they would last about 2 hours, get off the dozer tighten the bolts, repeat. Got mighty old.
I'm not interested in drilling/tapping for over sized bolts.
Any other decent fixes, without having to pull her apart again?
They are the top 2 bolts, so they are accessible.
Thanks
Jim

Which locktite product did you use? Go to their website and look at some of their less familiar products - some are more gap filling than others and have better adhesion properties. That said, a final drive takes a lot of different forces, and a good metal to metal bond may be the way to go, ie: drill and re-tap. Others on the board are machinists and they may have other thoughts. helicoils? Good luck. Paul

Thread inserts work well and helicoils do OK too. I've fixed many wallowed holes in my life, its hard to decide without seeing. If you can get to backside of the hole you can add a piece of metal with tapped holes and spot weld in or use nuts and spot weld in. Hope this helps.

Did you follow the Loctite instructions to the letter? Things have to be REALLY clean for it to work properly. For those bolts, red Loctite is probably what you want.
