JD1010 Crawler Cranking Problem

Post by TunkCreek » Sat Jun 17, 2017 4:47 pm

John Deere 1010 Crawler Diesel. Starter will crank motor about a 1/4 turn then hits a dead stop. Hitting the starter again I get just a thunk (technical term :) . I can manually turn the crank with a pry bar and try to start again. It will crank but with the same result. Good battery, good starter and good connections. I have no idea what is preventing the crank from rotating to get it started.

Probably a blown headgasket between two cylinders. Barring over moves most of the water to the other cylinder. Crank a while and you may bend a connecting rod.

Sounds like you have something hitting in a cylinder. As stated before, you will bend a push rod if you haven't already.

Pull the valve cover and ckeck to see if the valves are OK. Maybe you dropped a valve into a cylinder.
