So I was able to get to the point of having the spring compressed on my press and installed the all rod in to hold it. The problem that I am facing is once inside the frame, how do you hold the end of the of the spring end at the back of the arm well enough to be able to back the all rod? Any help that would be shared would be great.
In addition a 20 ton press works great to compress the assembly safely. The all rod also hold very well also. Just seems the holding it in place seems to be the main issue I have encountered to be able to keep it aligned in the rear boss and remove the rod.
Thank you in advance,
John

What size allthred rod did you use?
Re: John Deere 450B idler spring Installation Help
It's been a long time but if memory serves me right, it's 1". The "end cap" so to speak of the spring assembly is threaded. I had to purchase a tap to clean my threads out to get mine to thread in correctly.

Thanks, my end caps are rusted inside to the point the threads are all but gone. I was thing of taking them to a machine shop to see if they can be repaired. Any thoughts on this?
Re: John Deere 450B idler spring Installation Help
I thought the same thing but once I ran a tap thru mine they cleaned up pretty good. If you've not done it yet, I'd take a sand blaster to the cap to really determine the shape of the threads. They might surprise you, 1" threads have very wide turns.
A good machine shop can do miracles, I had one rebuild a main shaft rotor for my wood chipper for 1/2 the cost of a new one and I honestly think it was better than new once he was done with it (he machined it to a much tighter tolerance). I would not hesitate to let my machine shop rebuild my end cap but I guess it determines how much faith you have in yours.
