40c Safety blocks
I have a 40c 4 roller that I am doing some work on (Does it ever end?). When I bought the crawler a several years ago it was missing, among other things, the safety blocks. I picked up a set last year but when trying to install them, I find that there is not enough room between the sprocket and the crossbar to fit the blocks. I checked to make sure that I don't have oversize sprockets. What other things could cause this problem?

Usually it is the sideframe to clutch housing holes are oblonged due to someone replacing the acorn nuts with standard nuts and the holes get hammered out.

Have the track off to replace it and am checking for the source of the safety block clearance problem while I am at it. I noticed that the number on the sprockets is M3088T which doesn't agree with the number in my parts book. Is this the wrong sprocket?

Those are later sprockets, 420, 430, 440. You should have TE225 or 235YT sprockets.

Thanks Lavoy. This machine is definitely a mix of parts and backyard fixes. Are these sprockets larger diameter than the ones that should be on it? I think when I tackle the other side I will find even more surprises. Just from looking at it, the rollers on the other side are much smaller diameter than the proper ones on the side I'm now working on.

Not sure, they are different bushing size, and heavier. Might be slight difference in OD, although lots of times OD difference between sprockets is wear due to final drive bearings going out and grinding the sprocket on the track stop.

Thanks Lavoy. Guess I'll just continue to run these sprockets without safety blocks until I can get a chance to compare with someone who has the correct sprockets.

I don't think the sprockets are the issue, I have seen it done before, although I can't specifically say I remember if they had track stops or not. I'm still guessing that your final drives have moved ahead because of clutch housing mounting bolt issues. It can also extend all the way to the big bushings in the bellhousing. It isn't good to run the crawler if what I am guessing is occurring, it will just keep wearing and beating on stuff.
