Guages for 350b - RPM guage direction

Post by hdokes » Sat Jul 29, 2017 6:03 pm

I need to replace all the gauges on my newly acquired 350b crawler. Sure wish John Deere got the same kind of attention that Massey Ferguson seems to get on after market gauges. Anyway.... thought I would inquire after having searched through the forums here if anyone knew of a good source for 'reasonably priced' gauges for the 350b. Funny thing is... I can find all kinds of fuel gauges with John Deere vintage colors but it doesn't appear the 350b ever had a fuel gauge.

In addition, does anyone know whether the RPM gauge is a clockwise or counter clockwise system?

Edit:

New pic server is shaping up:

Ok... I'll provide the answer to my own question.... which is usually the indicator that one is losing their marbles. I mean... it's ok to talk to yourself.... but when you start answering yourself..... all bets are off.

Anyway.... there really isn't much for John Deere after market gauges out there. As I stated before, seems Massey is getting all the attention.

And.... the tachometer for a 350b turns clockwise..... Doh!

That is all.

There are companies listed in the Green Magazine and the Two Cylinder Magazine that refurish gauges and tach/hour meters. My tach needle was bouncing a lot, face looked horrible. I sent it to FL. The main bronze bushing was bad(causing needle bounce). He refurbished the whole tach, face included. Looks great, been working fine for 2 years. It was a couple hundred bucks. There are quite a few gauges on ebay, except the oil temp. Bruce

Jim, thanks for the tip on Steiner. I checked them out and they seem to be a bit shy for Deere parts as well... particularly in gauges. I will keep them in my book marks however and check them out every now and again.

Bruce, I have an extensive background in electronics and have considered pulling the ones I have and attempting to refurbish them as well. I have found water temp and fuel gauges on ebay but as I indicated before, the 350b had no fuel gauge on it. The tachometers available are for 2010 models which are mechanical and I'm pretty certain they wouldn't work with the 350b from an accuracy standpoint. I can find plenty of mechanical oil pressure gauges but the one on the 350b is electrical and if one can't find a matching sending unit than the reading will be off. When I get the chance I'll check the output on the sending unit and find out what it's operating range is (provided it is functional) than either match a gauge to it or as I stated earlier, try to refurbish the existing one. I have a high resolution color printer with UV and water resistant inks that I believe will work in refacing the gauges. All that will be for another day as I need to get the steering clutches fixed first.

Side note... when I bought the 350b the owner said he was throwing in a cooling fan in the dash at no extra charge. The cooling fan is the tachometer.... when the engine is running the needle just spins continuously.

Most of these older Deere crawlers didn't have a fuel gauge. There should be a metal dipstick in the fuel tank.

I have ordered and received a set of gauges that I believe I can make work, with accuracy, on my JD350-B and they also have the look and feel of original JD gauges.... though they are not. I had determined that all the original gauges are completely foo barred and that there won't be any way to reserect them. So.... I have a fully electrically operated compliment here (Aside from the tachometer) that I can test for voltage/current operations with low and high requirements and then will test the sending units for their output and compare that to mechanical gauges temporarily installed on the crawler. I then should be able to determine if the ranges of output matches up with the range of input on the new gauges or if I need to build some circuitry that will essentially convert from the defined output to the required input. I also have a water temp gauge that has a mechanical sending unit. It's odd that I could find these gauges but I can't find a compliment of sending units for them. I will have to do some additional research and see if I can nail that down as ideally that would be the best solution. A couple of these gauges were designated for the 2010 while others were designated for a Massey Ferguson.

The RPM gauges may be the trickiest as I have no idea what the ratio is for turns of the cable vs actual engine revolutions. Still working on the steering clutches so this will take a back seat for the time being.

The new gauges... pretty aren't they? Perhaps I should have used a more manly word..... Bitchin?

Hi,

I buy Stewart Warner gauges from the local racing/speed parts store. Most areas have them if not for racers, then for the street rod crowd. ;)
