440 Track Frame repair

Post by 440 iron popper » Wed Aug 09, 2017 9:38 pm

Hi All,

With photobucket asking the big price to have the pictures linked, i tried a new hosting site. Let see how it works!

Here is my repair on the track frames of the second 440 i bought.

The problem:

Worn out track frames:

I took the decision to repair the track frames of the first 440 i bought.
All bolts on these needed heat around with the torch and then removed with the help of 1/2 inch impact gun.
Some broke and we needed to weld a washer and a nut until we get them.
It took 3 acetylene and 6 oxygen tanks to free, torch what needed to be on them

The rock guards were repaired and reinforced. I used 3/4 bolts inside a 1" tube instead of the original 5/8 bolts.

Set of new rollers. 1 john deere and 9 after market. After inspecting the ones i have, this was the obvious choice

Track frames sandblasted. A lot of welding had to be done on them as well:

One assembled:

Let's see if this pictures hosting thing holds! More pictures to come. Thanks

Thanks!
I used www.imgbox.com

It is free and easy to use. This photobucket "offer" is bad... One has to re-link everything again for each thread or let it go. Show & tell is my favorite on here as we can see other's good work on their machine.

After both track frames were ready to install, removal of the old ones began. The previous owner had all the crossbar flanges welded to the track frames...

One done

I had a hard time trying to install the bolts of left hand side of the front crossbar. I noticed it was not lined up.. i had to loosen blade and main frame mounts to rotate the axle

Image

Once done I shimmed everything

Image

Keystock welded on the rear axle on each side to make a better joint combined with the bolts

Image

Then came idler, adjusting tubes, springs, shimming of the front idler wear blocks on the track frames.

After i painted the lower works, i decided to paint it all with jd old construction yellow.

Other things fixed: alternator bracket and charging problems, lower rad mounts, voltmeter installed, governor bearing changed, replaced all fluids, lh side final drive bearing preload tighter, replaced sprockets, installed a relay to cut off ignition and alternator field, replaced 21 track pads and more!

First time out the shop since january 2017

It is not a repair intended for tractor shows! With the reliable undercarriage i expect to do some trails on my land. If it gives me the same amount of hours of operation i spent on it fixing it, i will have nice trails!

Nice job and nice looking welds. I can say the latter because I am a welder by trade so it is one thing to buffalo the fans, another the players. They looked really nice.

So did the tractor.

Nice job on everything. Why did you go with the different throttle lever? I had to go through the same re-work with my rock guards, they were in pretty rough shape.
I tried to get my track frames off but they wouldn't budge. Hopefully I'll never need them off.

Thanks guys.

Ben, the dozer came with this 420 throttle lever from the past owner. It works well so I kept it like this up to now. I have a spare dash plate and everything to put it back original. It is going to be one of the winter's project!
